Shag Rug: Deep-Pile Wool, Knotted by Hand

Last updated

A shag rug is the rug people want to sit on. It gives under the foot, swallows the sound of steps and turns a living room into somewhere to stay. Most shag rugs on sale are polyester, though, and they lose their fullness within a few years. The rugs on this page are the originals the idea came from: Berber rugs from the Middle Atlas of Morocco, made of wool and knotted by hand. Beni Ourain with a long, loose pile, Beni Mrirt as dense and heavy as a pelt.

Height tells you little, density tells you everything

The pile is the layer of upright yarn you see and feel. Shag simply means that it is long, long enough for the individual strands to show and fall. But a long pile is not the same as a soft rug. If the pile is tall and thin, it lies down and you can see and feel the foundation beneath.

Density is what makes a rug feel deep: how many knots sit in a given area. A dense pile stands up, carries the weight of the foot and only then feels truly soft. The test takes two fingers. The harder it is to work down to the base, the better the rug.

Wool against polyester, three years on

Polyester fibre is smooth. Once it has been bent, it stays bent, which is why a synthetic shag mats and flattens along the walkways. It also builds up static and pulls dust towards itself. It feels soft in the shop and tires quickly at home.

Wool fibre is naturally crimped and springs back. Dents from furniture lift again and traffic lanes stay inconspicuous. Wool regulates moisture, carries little static and soils slowly. A hand-knotted shag in wool costs more to buy and is used for decades, and it can be washed and repaired along the way.

Beni Ourain and Beni Mrirt: two kinds of deep pile

The Beni Ourain has a long, rather loose pile in ivory, drawn with dark diamonds and lines. It looks light, almost cloud-like, and shows the track of a hand passed over it. These rugs were first made as covers and bedding in cold mountains, which is where the length of the wool comes from.

The Beni Mrirt is built differently: more tightly knotted and considerably heavier. Its pile stands like velvet on a large scale and holds its shape under a coffee table. Many are a single colour or textured tone on tone. Beni Mguild rugs add deep pile in strong, saturated colours.

Where shag belongs and where it does not

Living rooms and bedrooms are ideal, the rooms where people go barefoot, sit and lie down. Softness counts there and wear is light. The acoustic gain is real as well: a dense pile absorbs footfall and echo noticeably better than a flat rug.

Under a dining table, deep pile is a poor idea. Chairs drag and crumbs sink out of reach. It does not belong by the front door or under an office chair on castors either. Robot vacuums struggle with long pile and fringe, so fence the rug off and vacuum it by hand.

Care, and the rugs in this selection

Vacuum with a plain nozzle on high suction, in the direction of the pile and without a beater bar, which tears fibres out. Smaller rugs can be taken outside and shaken. New wool sheds for the first months and less with each pass. Loosen dents from furniture with your fingers or a soft brush.

The selection is mostly Beni Mrirt, with Beni Ourain and some Beni Mguild, from runners to rugs larger than 10 Γ— 13 ft. Ivory, cream, sand and taupe are the most common colours. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked

Questions

Are shag rugs hard to clean?
They need a little more care than a flat rug: a plain nozzle, the direction of the pile, and a shake outdoors for smaller pieces. Wool keeps dirt near the surface, so regular vacuuming is enough.
Do wool shag rugs shed?
For the first few months, yes. Short fibres left from making the rug work loose. It eases with every vacuuming and is not a sign of poor quality.
Is a wool shag rug better than a polyester one?
For anything beyond the short term, yes. Wool recovers from pressure and stays full, while polyester mats where it is walked on. A hand-knotted wool rug can also be washed and repaired.
Can a shag rug go over underfloor heating?
It can, but a thick wool pile insulates and holds back part of the heat. If you rely on the heating, choose a lower pile or leave more of the floor uncovered.

The person behind the piece

β€œBefore you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light β€” not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”

I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing β€” and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.

Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
