Beni Ouarain "Quiet Signs"

Small charcoal signs are scattered over a cream ground: groups of short bars set side by side like combs, a few solid triangles, single strokes standing alone. They follow no grid and no symmetry, and the spaces between them are as much part of the rug as the marks.

It measures 300 × 213 cm. Because the signs are spread over the whole field, the rug can be turned in any direction and furniture can stand anywhere on it without hiding the design. The wall photograph shows the full layout at a glance.
