Hand-Knotted Rug: How One Is Made and How to Recognise It
Last updated
A hand knotted rug and a handmade rug are not the same thing, though labels use the words as if they were. Handmade can mean a rug tied knot by knot on a loom. It can mean a flat weave with no pile. Or it can mean a rug shot with a tufting gun and held together with glue. Those are three very different objects in working time, lifespan and value. This guide shows how to tell them apart and follows a knotted rug from fleece to finished piece, as it is made in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The rugs on this page are of the first kind: knotted by hand, in wool.

Knotted, woven, tufted: three techniques under one word
In a hand-knotted rug, every tuft of the pile is a knot tied by hand around the warp threads. After each row of knots, one or more weft threads are passed across and beaten down with a heavy iron comb. It is the slowest method and the strongest. The design is part of the structure and cannot come away from it.
A hand-woven rug, such as a kilim, has no pile at all. It is an interlacing of warp and weft, thin and usable on both faces. Hand-tufted is something else again. A worker punches yarn into a stretched cloth with a gun, then the back is coated with latex and covered with a fabric lining. It takes days, and when new it can look deceptively like the real thing.
How to recognise a hand-knotted rug
Turn it over. On the back of a knotted rug you see the same design as on the front, made up of small dots: the backs of the knots. There is no cloth, no lining and no smell of rubber. If the back is covered with a uniform fabric, the rug is tufted.
Next, look at the fringe and the sides. On a knotted rug the fringe is the continuation of the warp, not a strip sewn on afterwards. The sides are not dead straight, lines are not perfectly parallel, and a motif that recurs is never identical to the last one. These are not faults. They are the signature of work done row after row, by eye.
From fleece to loom
It starts with the wool. After shearing, the fleece is washed, dried in the sun, carded to align the fibres and spun. Yarn for the design is dyed in hanks. Yarn for the ground, in pale rugs, is often left the natural colour of the sheep, anywhere from ivory to brown.
On an upright loom the warp is stretched, and from that moment the width of the rug is fixed. The weaver works from the bottom up: a row of knots, the weft, the comb, and again. In Berber rugs she follows no drawn pattern. She carries the design in her head and adjusts it as she goes. Depending on size and the density of the knots, a rug takes from several weeks to several months.
Why the difference matters in use
A knotted rug contains nothing that decays by itself. No glue to dry out, no backing to crumble: as long as the wool is there, the rug is there. That is why it can be washed by immersion, which a tufted rug cannot survive, and repaired by re-tying knots or rebuilding an edge.
There is a less technical reason too. A hand-knotted rug is unique by necessity. Even the same weaver could not make it twice in exactly the same way. Whoever chooses one brings home an object with its own proportions, hesitations and changes of mind, visible to anyone who looks closely.
The hand-knotted rugs in our collection
The collection brings together several Moroccan styles. Beni Ourain rugs have an ivory ground with dark diamonds. Beni Mrirt rugs are dense and heavy, often a single colour. Azilal rugs have a lower pile and a free, colourful drawing. Beni Mguild and Boujaad pieces work in deep colours, mostly wine red and blue.
Sizes run from narrow runners to rugs of about 12 Γ 15 ft. Each listing shows the rug in its own photographs, with the dimensions measured after it was finished. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- How can I tell if a rug is hand-knotted?
- From the back. The design should be visible there knot by knot, with no cloth glued on. The fringe is the end of the warp threads, and edges and motifs are slightly irregular.
- What is the difference between hand-knotted and hand-tufted?
- In a knotted rug every tuft is a knot around the warp and the rug holds together by itself. In a tufted rug the yarn is punched into a cloth and fixed with latex. That is faster and cheaper, but it lasts less long and cannot be washed thoroughly.
- How long does it take to knot a rug?
- It depends on size and knot density: a few weeks for a small piece, several months for a large, dense rug. Preparing the wool comes on top of that.
- Are hand-knotted rugs always irregular?
- To some degree. Sizes are never perfectly round figures, sides may not be parallel, and the design varies. That belongs to hand work and separates it from a factory product.

The person behind the piece
βBefore you buy, Iβll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light β not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.β
Iβm Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing β and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, Iβm on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
