Blue Rug: Teal, Indigo, Cobalt and Navy in Hand-Knotted Wool
Last updated
A blue rug brings calm and depth into a room, the way sky and water do. It is also the colour where the exact shade matters most: there is more distance in mood between a pale turquoise and a deep navy than between blue and green. The rugs on this page are knotted by hand in Morocco, in wool. They include dense Beni Mrirt pieces in teal and indigo, long Beni Mguild rugs in cobalt and navy, and the odd Azilal in azure or turquoise.

Teal, turquoise, indigo, cobalt, navy
Teal is a dark blue with a clear share of green. It is rich and soft at once, and it is the shade most present in our selection. Turquoise is its light, bright relative, fresh and summery. Both sit between blue and green, which makes them warmer than you expect a blue to be.
Indigo is the deep blue of textile history, never perfectly even. Cobalt is brighter and makes a statement. Navy runs almost to black and behaves as a neutral, only friendlier than charcoal. Pale blue makes a room look bigger, and shows more of daily life.
Does a blue rug make a room cold?
Blue has a reputation for coolness, and in a north-facing room with grey walls a pale blue rug can indeed feel chilly. That is the fault of the company it keeps. Next to wood, leather, linen and warm lamplight, the same blue turns deep and comfortable.
Wool does part of the work. Its surface is matt and soaks up light, where synthetic fibre in blue quickly takes on a metallic gleam. A dense wool pile in teal or indigo looks closer to velvet than to plastic. To be safe, choose a shade with green in it, teal over cobalt, and surround it with warm materials.
What to pair with a blue rug
The opposite of blue is orange, and anything in that direction makes a blue rug sing: tan leather, copper, rust, terracotta, honey-coloured oak. A grey sofa gains presence on a blue floor, a beige one gains life. Mustard and blush work as small accents.
White with blue slides quickly towards the seaside. To avoid it, swap pure white for cream and bring in a third element, wood or black. The one hard case is a room where walls, floor and furniture are all cool grey. Then there is no warmth anywhere, and a rug cannot supply it alone.
Sizes, from runner to long room rug
The Beni Mrirt rugs here come in the common living-room sizes, around 6 ft 6 in Γ 10 ft and 8 Γ 10 ft 6 in. Several of the Beni Mguild pieces are unusually long for their width, about 6 ft 5 in Γ 12 ft 8 in or 6 ft 7 in Γ 13 ft 10 in. Sizes like that are rare, and they solve a problem with few other answers: a long sitting room, the strip in front of a wall of glass, a dining area with a long table.
There are also a couple of hallway runners, one of them in light mint and turquoise. The measured size is given with every rug, because hand work does not keep to standard formats.
The rugs in this selection
The Beni Mrirt pieces in teal and indigo are thick and heavy. Some are nearly plain with a ribbed surface, others carry cream lines or graphic fields. The Beni Mguild rugs show blue as a large, quiet expanse in cobalt or navy, sometimes overlaid with a fine grid.
Each rug is one of a kind and photographed as it is. Blues vary from screen to screen more than most colours, so read the description of the shade as well as looking at the picture. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- What colour sofa goes with a blue rug?
- Tan leather is the classic, because orange-brown is the opposite of blue. Grey, beige and cream all work too. A blue sofa on a blue rug only succeeds when the two shades are clearly different.
- What is the difference between teal and turquoise?
- Both lie between blue and green. Teal is dark and muted and reads as elegant; turquoise is light, clear and fresh. Teal is the easier one to combine with warm natural materials.
- Will a blue wool rug fade in the sun?
- Any dyed textile softens in tone after years of strong direct sunlight. Turn the rug twice a year and the change is even and hardly noticeable.
- Does a navy rug work in a small room?
- Yes, if it is large enough to carry the seating and the rest of the room stays light. Navy is softer than black and adds depth without swallowing the space.

The person behind the piece
βBefore you buy, Iβll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light β not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.β
Iβm Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing β and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, Iβm on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
