8x10 Rug: Hand-Knotted Moroccan Wool Around 8 Γ— 10 Feet

Last updated

An 8x10 rug is the size most living rooms are built around. It is large enough to gather a sofa, two chairs and a coffee table into one group, and small enough to leave a frame of floor in an ordinary room. With hand-knotted rugs there is one thing to know from the start: none of them measures exactly 8 Γ— 10 ft. Each comes off the loom at its own size. The rugs on this page are the pieces in our collection closest to eight by ten, from about 8 ft to 8 ft 10 in wide and from 9 ft 7 in to a little over 12 ft long. All are Beni Mrirt rugs from Morocco, in wool.

What an 8x10 does in a living room, a bedroom and a dining room

There are two ways to use it in a sitting area. With the front legs of every seat on the rug, an 8 Γ— 10 suits a sofa of up to about 8 ft and a pair of armchairs, in a room of roughly 11 Γ— 13 ft or more. With all legs on the rug, it holds a smaller group: a loveseat or compact sofa and one chair. Either way, keep 12 to 18 inches of floor showing at the walls.

In a bedroom, lay it crossways under the bed so that the long side spans the width. A queen bed then has about 30 inches of rug on each side, a king about 22. In a dining room it takes a table for six, up to about 6 ft by 3 ft 6 in, with the chairs still on the rug when they are pulled out.

8x11, 9x10, 8x12: the sizes in between

People search for 8x11, 9x10 and 9x11 rugs because their room is a little longer or wider than standard. Factory rugs rarely come in those sizes. Hand-knotted rugs do, by nature: a weaver sets the width on the loom and the length is whatever the design needs, so a piece ends up 8 ft 6 in by 10 ft 6 in, or 8 ft 2 in by 11 ft 6 in.

That is why this page covers more than the nominal size. If you want something slightly longer than 8 Γ— 10, look at the pieces of 11 to 12 ft in length. If you want a little more width, look at those near 8 ft 10 in. The measured width and length are given for every rug, in centimetres and to the nearest one, so you can match them to your floor plan directly.

8x10 or 9x12?

The honest test is the furniture, not the room. Tape both sizes on the floor. If the 8 Γ— 10 outline leaves the back legs of the armchairs off the rug and that bothers you, or if a sectional's chaise runs past the edge, the room wants a 9 Γ— 12. If the larger outline comes within a foot of the walls or blocks a doorway, stay with the 8 Γ— 10.

When in doubt between the two, the larger size is more often right, provided a border of floor remains. A rug that is too small makes furniture look scattered. A rug that is slightly generous simply looks intended.

What these rugs are like

Every piece in this size range is a Beni Mrirt: a densely knotted rug with a deep, heavy pile that stays put without help and keeps its shape under furniture. The largest group is in sand and taupe, followed by ivory and cream. There are also pieces in camel, amber, sage and olive green, teal, terracotta, grey and charcoal.

The designs are restrained, as suits a rug of this area. Many carry horizontal lines or bands, others are a single colour with only the texture of the wool for interest, and some have a graphic drawing, a lattice or a fine grid of lines. At eight by ten, a quiet rug holds a room together better than a busy one.

Practical points before you order

A dense wool rug of this size is heavy, and it takes two people to lay it. Clear the floor first and bring the furniture back afterwards. Check any door that has to swing over the rug: measure the gap beneath it against the depth of the pile. Use a rug pad on hard floors, cut a little smaller than the rug.

Each rug is one of a kind and photographed as it is; when it is sold it leaves this page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked

Questions

How big is an 8x10 rug in centimetres?
About 244 Γ— 305 cm. Hand-knotted rugs vary around that figure; the pieces shown here range from roughly 242 to 270 cm wide and 292 to 376 cm long.
Is an 8x10 rug big enough for my living room?
For a sofa up to about 8 ft with two chairs, with front legs on the rug, yes. For a sectional or a larger seating group, 9 Γ— 12 ft is usually the better choice.
I am looking for an 8x11 or 9x10 rug. Do you have one?
Hand-knotted rugs come in exactly those in-between sizes. Several pieces on this page are longer than 10 ft or close to 9 ft wide; check the measured dimensions on each rug.
Will an 8x10 rug fit under a king-size bed?
Yes. Placed across the bed, it leaves about 22 inches on each side and extends beyond the foot. Start it just in front of the nightstands.

The person behind the piece

β€œBefore you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light β€” not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”

I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing β€” and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.

Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
