How big are handmade Moroccan rugs? The sizes of 274 rugs, counted

Shops sell rugs in fixed sizes: 160 × 230 cm, 200 × 300 cm, 8 × 10 feet. A rug made by hand on a loom in Morocco does not follow that list.

On 12 October 2026 we took the recorded length and width of every rug in our catalogue, 274 in all, and counted. This page gives the figures, the method and the full table as a download.

What the count shows

  1. 215 different sizes among 274 rugs. 195 of those sizes are shared by no other rug in the catalogue.
  2. 41% of the rugs lie within 10 cm of a common shop size, metric or in feet. The other 59% do not.
  3. 22 rugs (8%) measure exactly a standard metric size.
  4. The busiest neighbourhood is 200 × 300 cm: 51 rugs (19%) lie within 10 cm of it. Around 300 × 400 cm there are 21, around 160 × 230 cm only 7.
  5. Half of all rugs have a long side between 290 and 320 cm. The median long side is 305 cm, the median short side 200 cm and the median area 6.2 m².
  6. The usual proportion is close to 2 : 3 (median 1.46 to 1). 31 rugs are runners, at least two and a half times as long as they are wide.
  7. Sizes come in groups: 130 rugs measure 6 to 9 m² and 36 measure 12 m² or more. In between, from 9 to 12 m², the count is 1.

What this means when you buy

Measure the room, not the catalogue. If your plan asks for 200 × 300 cm, a rug of 195 × 310 cm does the same work. Decide beforehand how many centimetres you can give or take on each side, and search within that margin.

If the size is fixed and there is no margin, for instance between two walls, a rug made to order is the reliable route.

How we counted

Source: the ARINID catalogue on 12 October 2026, when 285 pieces were for sale. Counted: every rug with a recorded length and width, 274 in all. Not counted: 8 wall panels, 2 mats of reed and leather, 1 rug without recorded dimensions, and everything already sold.

The dimensions are the ones recorded in our catalogue, in whole centimetres. The long side is the larger of the two.

“Within 10 cm” means that both sides differ by at most 10 cm from the shop size. Shop sizes, metric: 80 × 150, 120 × 170, 140 × 200, 160 × 230, 200 × 290, 200 × 300, 240 × 340, 250 × 350 and 300 × 400 cm. In feet: 5 × 8, 6 × 9, 8 × 10, 9 × 12 and 10 × 14.

What these figures do not say

These are the rugs one seller had for sale on one day, most of them Beni Mrirt and Azilal. They are not a sample of all Moroccan rugs.

The catalogue changes with every sale. The figures on this page stay as they were on the date above; the download carries the same date.
