A Beni Ourain rug 8x10 is one of the most searched-for rugs there is, and one of the most often misdescribed. Machine-made and tufted rugs in the Beni Ourain style come in an exact 8 by 10 feet because they are made to that specification. Rugs actually knotted in the Beni Ourain tradition come off the loom at whatever size they reached, and in our collection the room-sized ones are a little narrower: nearer 7 by 10. Does 8x10 fit your room

An 8x10 rug measures about 244 by 305 cm and covers 80 square feet. It is the standard choice for a living room of roughly 11 by 13 feet or more, where it takes the front legs of a sofa and two chairs, and for a queen or king bed, where it shows about two feet on each side.

Before fixing on exactly 8 feet of width, measure what the room needs. In a room 11 feet wide, a rug 7 feet wide leaves two feet of floor on each side, where an 8-foot one leaves eighteen inches. In most rooms either works, and the length is the same.

Why a real Beni Ourain rug is rarely exactly 8x10

A hand-knotted rug is as wide as its loom was set and as long as the weaver chose to go. Nobody is working to a retail size chart. The rug is measured afterwards, and the figures are whatever they turn out to be.

This is why a listing that offers a Beni Ourain in 5x8, 8x10 and 9x12 from a drop-down menu is telling you something. The rug is either made to order, which is legitimate if it is stated, or it is a style copy. A single found piece has one size, and usually an odd one.

What we have near 8x10

We hold twenty-two Beni Ourain rugs. None is a full 8 feet wide. Sixteen measure between 6 ft 5 in and 7 ft 3 in wide and 9 ft 6 in to 10 ft 6 in long, which is the 7x10 class: the same length as an 8x10 and up to a foot narrower. Five more are long and narrow, about 6 feet by 12.

Take a found Beni Ourain at 7x10 if you want the genuine article with its own drawing and your room can spare a few inches. Take an ivory Beni Mrirt if you need the width, a denser pile, or a rug under a dining table. Have one made if the size has to be exact.
