The best rugs for a living room are the ones chosen for that particular room, and living rooms differ more than any other space in a house. One is a small sitting room in a flat. Another is half of an open-plan floor. A third is where three children and a dog spend every evening. The same rug cannot be the best in all of them. The small living room
In a small room the instinct is to buy a small rug, and it is the wrong one. A rug that sits in front of the sofa like a bath mat makes the room look smaller. Choose the largest rug that leaves 8 to 12 inches of floor at the walls, so that the front legs of the sofa and both chairs rest on it. Usually that is a 5x8 or a 6x9.
Keep it light and quiet: ivory, cream or sand, with a faint lattice or a few lines. Pale floors reflect light, and a fine pattern reads as texture. Avoid dark plain rugs and large bold motifs, both of which close a small room in.
The large living room
A large room needs a rug big enough to hold the whole seating group, all legs on it, with a walkway of bare floor around the outside. That means 9x12 or 10x14 in most cases. Anything smaller leaves the furniture adrift.
Scale the pattern up with the room. Big diamonds, broad bands or a plain rug of real depth all carry at a distance, where a tiny repeat blurs. Large rooms can also take colour: camel, terracotta, charcoal. If the room is very long, two rugs defining two groups work better than one enormous one.
The open-plan living area
Here the rug is architecture. It draws the edge of the living room within a larger space, so its size is set by the furniture group and not by the walls. Every seat should stand on it, at least by its front legs, and the rug should stop clear of the routes people walk to the kitchen or the door.
Relate it to the dining area without matching. If there is a rug under the table, let the two share one colour and differ in pattern, or share a type and differ in colour. A thick wool rug also does real work in an open plan by soaking up the echo of all those hard surfaces.
The best rugs for a family living room
With children and pets, the best living room rug is patterned and mid-toned, in wool, with a dense pile. Multicoloured rugs with diamonds and scattered signs are the most forgiving of all, because very little shows on them. Wool gives you time to blot a spill before it sets.
Avoid ivory, long shag and anything precious for these years, and use a non-slip pad, because children run. If spills are a daily event, accept that a washable rug may be the right answer for a while. A good wool rug can come out again when the youngest is past the juice-cup stage.
The formal sitting room, and what we hold
A room for adults and evenings can have the rug that the family room cannot: pale, deep and plain, or a single dramatic colour. This is where a thick ivory rug with almost no pattern, or a large dark one, is at its best, with all the furniture standing on it.
