How to Get Ink Out of a Rug: Know the Ink, Then Dab
How to get ink out of a rug depends first on which ink it is. Ballpoint ink is oily and needs a solvent. Washable marker and fountain pen ink are water-based and come out with water. Printer toner is a dry powder that must not get wet at all. Using the right method for the wrong ink can turn a small mark into a permanent one. This guide sorts the common cases and gives the steps for each, with the extra care a wool rug and its dyes ask for.

First steps for any wet ink
Blot with a white paper towel, pressing straight down and lifting. Use a fresh piece each time and stop when nothing more comes up. Do not rub, and do not add water yet. Until you know what kind of ink it is, water may only spread it.
If you have the pen, look at it. Ballpoints and most gel pens are oil- or pigment-based. Felt-tips marked washable, fountain pens and rollerballs are usually water-based. Permanent markers say so on the barrel. If you cannot tell, try a drop of cold water on the edge of the stain with a white cloth: if colour moves into the cloth easily, the ink is water-based.
Ballpoint ink: rubbing alcohol on a cloth
Test first. Moisten a white cloth with rubbing alcohol and press it for thirty seconds on a hidden part of the rug, on the colours near the stain. If the rug's own dye stays out of the cloth, continue. Dab the ink from its outer edge inward. The ink dissolves and transfers into the cloth. Move to a clean area of cloth every few dabs.
Wet the cloth, never the rug. Alcohol poured onto the pile carries dissolved ink downward and outward into a larger, paler stain. When the cloth stops picking up colour, dab with a few drops of mild dish soap in cold water, rinse by dabbing with clean cold water, and blot dry.
Water-based ink: cold water and mild soap
For washable marker, fountain pen ink and most children's pens, alcohol is unnecessary. Dab with cold water on a white cloth, blotting up the colour as it loosens. Then use a few drops of mild dish soap or wool detergent in a cup of cold water, dab, wait a few minutes and blot.
Rinse with clean cold water and blot until dry to the touch. If a tint remains, one part white vinegar to two parts cold water, left on for five minutes, often clears it. Water-based inks respond well on wool as long as they are treated before they have sat for days.
Permanent marker, and what to avoid
Permanent marker is a dye in alcohol, designed to stay. Rubbing alcohol on a cloth will lighten it and sometimes remove it, using the same dab-and-lift method as for ballpoint. Expect several rounds, and accept that a shadow may remain. A large permanent-marker stain on a pale rug is a case for a rug-cleaning specialist.
Do not use nail polish remover containing acetone, which is hard on dyes, or bleach, which dissolves wool. Hairspray is an old tip that relied on its alcohol content; modern sprays leave a sticky film, so use plain alcohol. Milk soaks and hot water do nothing useful and can leave problems of their own.
Printer toner and other special cases
Toner from a laser printer or copier is not ink but a fine plastic powder. Do not wet it and do not rub it. Vacuum it up with the nozzle held just above the pile, and repeat until no more comes away. Heat and moisture fuse toner to fibre, so keep hot water and hair dryers well away. Liquid ink from an inkjet cartridge is water-based and is treated as above.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- What removes ballpoint ink from a wool rug?
- Rubbing alcohol on a white cloth, dabbed from the outside of the stain inward, after a colour test on a hidden corner. Finish with mild soap and cold water.
- Does hairspray remove ink from a rug?
- Only because of the alcohol older sprays contained. Modern sprays often leave a sticky film. Use plain rubbing alcohol.
- How do I get permanent marker out of a rug?
- Dab with rubbing alcohol on a white cloth, repeating several times. It often lightens to a shadow. Large stains on pale rugs need a specialist.
- How do I clean printer toner off a rug?
- Vacuum it dry, without touching or wetting it. Water and heat bond toner to the fibres.

The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is a one-off, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
