A Beni Ourain rug 9x12 is what many people want for a large living room: the calm ivory field and dark diamonds, at a size big enough for the whole seating group. As a found piece it is uncommon, and we will say at once that none of our Beni Ourain rugs is that large. What we do hold are large ivory rugs of the neighbouring Beni Mrirt type, and a bespoke studio that makes a Beni Ourain design to measure. What a 9x12 rug does

A 9x12 measures about 274 by 366 cm, or 108 square feet. It suits living rooms of roughly 12 by 15 feet and more, where it lets a sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table all stand fully on the rug. It is also the size for a table of eight in a dining room, and for a king bed with space to walk around it.

Leave 12 to 18 inches of floor between the rug and the walls. If that would leave less than a foot, an 8x10 is the better fit. If the room is larger still, look at 10x14.

Why a large Beni Ourain rug is scarce

The wider the rug, the wider the loom it needs and the more wool and time it takes. A rug 9 feet wide is a substantial undertaking, and in our own collection the Beni Ourain pieces stop at about 7 ft 3 in wide.

Rugs sold as Beni Ourain in an exact 9x12 are therefore usually one of two things: made to order, or made elsewhere in the style. Both can be good rugs. Ask which it is, ask for the fibre and the construction, and ask for a photograph of the back.

The large ivory rugs we hold

The rugs shown on this page are thirty-nine pieces between about 86 and 129 square feet. Thirty-seven are Beni Mrirt and two are Beni Mguild. Ten are sand or taupe and eight are ivory or cream, and the rest include camel, charcoal and other tones. None is a Beni Ourain.

A Beni Mrirt is the closest thing: from the same Middle Atlas mountains, in thick wool, usually plainer in design and denser underfoot. For the pale, quiet look at a large size, the eight ivory pieces are the place to start. We also hold thirty-five rugs of about 10 by 13 or 10 by 14 feet, the smallest of which appear in this group.

Having a Beni Ourain rug made at 9x12

Our bespoke studio offers a Beni Ourain pattern in sizes up to 16 ft 5 in by 19 ft 8 in. You choose the measurements to the centimetre, the colour of the ground and the colour of the lines.

A rug made to order is the right answer when the room dictates the size: when 9x12 is exactly what fits, or when the ideal is something in between, such as 9 ft 6 in by 13 ft. Measure twice, and mark the outline on the floor with tape before you order.

Choosing

If you want a rug now and the look matters more than the name, choose among the large ivory and sand Beni Mrirt pieces. If you want the Beni Ourain drawing specifically, at this size, have it made. If a smaller rug would in fact do, sixteen of our Beni Ourain rugs are about 7x10, the same class as most living-room rugs.
