7x10 Rug: Our Most Common Hand-Knotted Size, Around 6 ft 8 in × 10 ft

Last updated

A 7x10 rug is what the rest of the world calls 200 × 300 centimetres, and it is the single most common size in our collection of hand-knotted Moroccan rugs. That gives it one clear advantage over every other size: choice. Where we have a handful of pieces at four by six or five by seven, at this size we have dozens, in nearly every style we carry. They measure from about 6 ft 1 in to 7 ft 3 in wide and from 9 ft 2 in to 10 ft 8 in long. All are wool and all are knotted by hand.

What a 7x10 fits

In a living room it is the natural size for a three-seater sofa of up to seven and a half feet with one or two armchairs. The front legs of the furniture rest on the wool, the coffee table stands in the middle, and a band of floor shows all round. In rooms of 170 to 270 square feet it looks considered without filling the space.

In a bedroom, laid across a queen bed, it leaves about two and a half feet on each side. Under a dining table it works with a table for four. For six, the chairs along the long sides lose their back legs over the edge, and a wider rug is needed.

7x10 or 8x10: what the extra width changes

On paper the two sizes share a length and differ by one foot of width. In hand-knotted pieces the gap is wider: ours at 7 × 10 average about 6 ft 8 in across, ours at 8 × 10 about 8 ft 4 in. That extra foot and a half is depth in front of the sofa. On a 7 × 10, the coffee table sits near the far edge and armchairs opposite the sofa stand with their front legs on the rug at most. On an 8 × 10 they can stand on it entirely.

So choose by the layout. A sofa against a wall with a table in front and little else suits a 7 × 10, and it leaves more floor for a walkway. A sofa with chairs facing it wants the extra width. In a room less than eleven feet deep, the narrower rug is usually the one that keeps a proper border.

Every style at one size

The Azilal rugs are the most numerous here. They have a lower pile and a free drawing, most often in several colours on ivory, and they are easy to live with under a coffee table and where people pass. They are also lighter to lift than the deep-pile rugs.

The Beni Ourain rugs bring a long ivory pile with dark diamonds and lines, the look most people have in mind when they say Moroccan rug. The Beni Mrirt rugs are denser and heavier, with a restrained graphic drawing, a few lines or none at all, in terracotta, sand, taupe and cream, with the odd piece in teal or sage. With this many pieces to choose from, it is worth deciding on pile and colour first and letting those two narrow the field.

Three checks before ordering

First, doors. If one has to pass over the rug, measure the gap between its lower edge and the floor and compare it with the kind of pile you want. Second, the sofa. The rug should be longer than the sofa by at least 6 to 8 inches at each end, or it will look skimpy.

Third, the exact size. A hand-knotted rug may measure 6 ft 5 in × 10 ft or 6 ft 10 in × 9 ft 8 in, with sides that are not quite parallel. In an open room that makes no difference. Between two walls or in front of patio doors it can. The measured dimensions are on every listing.

The rugs in this selection

This is our largest group at any single size. Azilal rugs lead, followed by Beni Ourain and Beni Mrirt, with a single Beni Mguild in burgundy. Multicoloured and ivory pieces are about equally common and together make up most of the group. Terracotta, sand and taupe follow, and there are a few rugs in teal, sage, rose and gold.

Each rug is one of a kind and leaves the page when sold. The measured width and length are on every listing. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked

Questions

How big is a 7x10 rug in centimetres?
About 213 × 305 cm. The usual metric equivalent is 200 × 300 cm. The pieces shown here measure roughly 186 to 220 cm wide and 280 to 325 cm long.
What sofa suits a 7x10 rug?
A three-seater up to about seven and a half feet, alone or with an armchair. With a sectional or several seats round the coffee table, go up to 8 × 10 or 9 × 12 ft.
Is there much difference between a 7x10 and an 8x10 rug?
A foot on paper, and nearer a foot and a half in our hand-knotted pieces. That decides whether chairs facing the sofa can stand on the rug. In narrower rooms the 7 × 10 leaves a better border of floor.
Does a 7x10 rug fit under a queen bed?
Yes. Laid across the bed it leaves about two and a half feet of rug on each side. For a king bed, a wider rug is more comfortable.

The person behind the piece

“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”

I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.

Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
