Scandinavian Rug: Ivory and Sand Wool for Nordic Rooms

Last updated

A Scandinavian rug has to do a lot with very little. Nordic rooms are built on white walls, pale wood and furniture with plain lines, and they depend on one or two soft things to stop them feeling bare. The rug is the largest of those. It should be light in colour, natural in material and calm in pattern, and it should feel good under bare feet. Ivory wool rugs from Morocco suit exactly this kind of room. The rugs on this page are knotted by hand in ivory, cream and sand.

Why a Nordic room needs wool on the floor

A room of hard, pale surfaces is bright, and it can also be cold and echoing. A thick wool rug is the biggest piece of soft material in the space. It absorbs sound, warms the floor and makes slender furniture look less sparse. What Scandinavians call cosiness comes largely from layers of texture: wood, wool, linen, candlelight. The rug is the bottom layer.

Wool also suits the climate the style was made for. It insulates a cold floor through a long winter and wears for decades. A rug that is going to be the main textile in a quiet room should be one you can live with for a long time.

Not one white but several

Ivory and cream are the classic choices. They are warm whites, not paper white, and they sit naturally on pale oak, ash or pine. They make a room lighter and more open. They also show marks, so they suit homes where shoes come off at the door and meals stay at the table.

Sand, oatmeal and taupe are the practical Nordic colours. They are just as calm, hide far more, and are less fussy about the floor beneath. With children or pets in the house, sand is usually the easier way to get the same pale, restful look.

Pattern: a few lines, a lattice, or none

The rule for pattern in a Scandinavian room is little and clear. A few dark lines on ivory, or an uneven lattice of diamonds, is plenty. Hand-knotted lines are not perfectly straight and the diamonds vary in size. In a room where everything else is neat, that small irregularity is welcome.

Quieter still is a tone-on-tone design, where the pattern is nearly the same shade as the ground and shows mainly through light and shadow. From across the room it reads as plain; close up it has texture. When the sofa or cushions already carry pattern, this is the safest choice.

Three kinds of rug, three feels underfoot

Beni Ourain rugs are the ones most often associated with this look: an ivory ground with dark diamonds, known for a longer, softer pile. Beni Mrirt rugs are more tightly knotted, heavier and crisper in their drawing, and suit a living room that is used every day.

Azilal rugs are lighter and thinner. The ones chosen for this page have an ivory ground, with freer lines than the other two. For softness, look at Beni Ourain. For durability, Beni Mrirt. For a hand-drawn touch in a pale room, Azilal.

The Scandinavian rugs in this selection

Sixty-nine rugs: forty Beni Mrirt, sixteen Beni Ourain and thirteen Azilal. Fifty-two are ivory or cream and seventeen are sand or taupe. Some carry diamonds or a lattice, some have lines, and some have very little pattern and come close to plain.

Twenty-nine measure around 6 ft 7 in by 9 ft 10 in. Eighteen are 8x10 or larger, for generous living rooms. Thirteen are mid-sized, seven are runners and two are small. Each rug is one of a kind, with its exact measurements on its own page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked

Questions

What colour rug suits Scandinavian style?
Ivory and cream are the classics. Sand, oatmeal and taupe are just as calm and hide marks better.
Are Moroccan rugs Scandinavian?
They come from Morocco, but ivory wool rugs with dark diamonds fit the pale colours, natural materials and simple lines of Nordic rooms very well.
Is an ivory rug hard to keep clean?
It shows more than a darker rug. Weekly vacuuming and prompt blotting of spills keep it presentable. Sand is easier with children or pets.
What size rug for a Scandinavian living room?
Around 6 ft 7 in by 9 ft 10 in or an 8x10 for a three-seat sofa, with the front legs on the rug and a border of floor all round.

The person behind the piece

β€œBefore you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light β€” not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”

I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing β€” and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.

Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
