Boho Decor: Building a Boho Living Room or Bedroom from the Rug Up
Last updated
Boho decor looks unplanned, and the rooms that do it well are anything but. The look rests on a few things: colour that seems a little faded, texture you want to touch, objects that were clearly made by a hand, and plants. Nothing matches, yet everything belongs. The simplest way to get there is to start with the rug, because it is the largest pattern in the room and everything else can take its cue from it. This page shows how to build a boho living room or bedroom from the floor up.

What boho decor is made of
Four ingredients do most of the work. Warm colour: terracotta, mustard, rose and rust, with ivory and wood to rest the eye. Layered textiles: a rug, a throw, cushions in different weaves. Natural materials: wool, linen, rattan, cane, unvarnished wood, clay. And greenery, more of it than seems reasonable.
What holds it together is that things look collected over time and made by people: a hand-knotted rug with wandering lines, a turned wooden bowl, a basket. Boho goes wrong when everything is bought on the same day from the same shelf, because then it is a theme and no longer a room.
Start a boho living room with the rug
Choose the rug first and take three colours from it. Use the quietest for the big surfaces, such as the sofa and the curtains, the middle one for cushions and a throw, and the strongest in small doses: a vase, a print, a single chair. The room will look pulled together without anything actually matching.
Size matters more here than in other styles, because a boho room holds many small things and needs one large thing to anchor them. The front legs of all the seating should stand on the rug. Low seating suits the look: a deep sofa, floor cushions, a pouf, a low wooden table. Leave part of the rug uncovered so the pattern can be seen.
A boho bedroom
In a bedroom the rule is softer colour and fewer objects, because the room has to let you sleep. One patterned rug, plain linen bedding, a woven wall hanging or a single large plant. Let the rug carry the pattern and keep the walls quiet.
Place the rug so that it reaches at least two feet beyond each side of the bed and you step onto wool in the morning. With a queen bed that usually means something near 7x10 or 8x10. Two runners, one on each side, do the same job in a narrow room and suit the unmatched spirit of the style, since they do not have to be a pair.
Layering, and when to stop
Layering rugs is a boho signature. A large, flat, neutral rug goes underneath, and a smaller patterned one lies on top, at an angle or under the coffee table. The upper rug should be clearly smaller, about two thirds the size of the one beneath, or the pair looks like a mistake.
The other half of the skill is restraint. For every pattern, add something plain. If the rug is multicoloured, let the sofa be one colour. If the room starts to feel busy, take out small objects before you take out the rug. One large pattern, a few textures and plenty of plants will always look better than twenty souvenirs.
Rugs for boho decor in our collection
The rugs shown on this page come from our whole collection of 275 hand-knotted wool rugs. For boho decor, look first at the Azilal rugs: 120 pieces, most of them multicoloured, with diamonds, lines, signs and blocks of colour. Seventy-eight rugs in the collection are multicoloured. The eleven Beni Mguild rugs and the two Boujaad bring deeper colour.
If you prefer a quieter boho room, the seventy-one rugs with an ivory or cream ground give the texture and the handmade character without the colour. Each rug is one of a kind, with its exact measurements on its own page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
