Mid Century Modern Rug: Earth Tones and Clean Lines in Wool

Last updated

A mid century modern rug has a job that is easy to describe. The furniture of that period stands on thin legs and shows a lot of floor: a teak sideboard, a walnut armchair, a low sofa on tapered feet. The rug has to supply what those pieces leave out, which is warmth, colour and softness underfoot. A deep wool pile suits it for exactly that reason. The rugs on this page are knotted by hand in the palette the period loved: rust, camel, caramel, mustard and olive.

The palette: rust, camel, caramel, olive

Mid-century colour is warm and slightly muted. Burnt orange and rust, the browns of camel and walnut, golden caramel and mustard, and a deep olive green. These are colours that sit next to oiled wood without competing with it, because they come from the same end of the spectrum.

One of them is enough. A rust rug under a walnut coffee table, with cushions in mustard or cream, is a complete scheme. Mixing several strong colours from the palette in one room quickly turns period style into costume.

Pattern: simple geometry, or none

The patterns that suit this furniture are plain and graphic. Lines and bands, a grid, large diamonds drawn in outline, or a solid field of colour with nothing but the texture of the pile. They echo the straight edges and gentle curves of the furniture without adding detail.

Hand-knotted lines are never ruler-straight, and that is an advantage here. Mid-century rooms can look severe when everything is crisp. A grid that wanders slightly, or a band whose edge wavers, takes the stiffness out of the room while keeping its order.

With teak, walnut and thin legs

Furniture on slim legs lets you see the rug underneath, so more of the rug is on show than with a skirted sofa. That argues for a rug you like looking at, and for a pile with some depth. A dense wool rug also stops light chairs from sliding and softens the sound in a room with bare walls and wood floors.

Colour against wood needs a clear step. A camel rug under teak furniture on an oak floor can merge into one brown. Choose a rug distinctly darker or more saturated than the wood, such as rust or olive, or one in which cream lines break up the field.

Size and placement

Low, compact seating looks best fully or mostly on the rug. For a sofa and two chairs, a rug around 6 ft 7 in by 9 ft 10 in is usually right, with the front legs of every piece standing on it. Larger seating groups and open-plan rooms want 8x10 or more.

A runner in the same palette works in the hallway that leads to the living room, and ties the two spaces together. Leave a border of floor around any rug. In this style the wood floor is part of the picture.

The rugs in this selection

Forty-one rugs. Twenty-eight are dense Beni Mrirt, ten are Azilal, two are Beni Ourain and one is a vintage piece. Twelve are in camel and walnut browns, twelve in rust and terracotta, seven in caramel and gold, seven in faded vintage tones and three in olive. Fifteen carry lines or bands, nine have diamonds, five have grids and four are plain.

Seventeen measure around 6 ft 7 in by 9 ft 10 in. Fifteen are larger, from 8x10 up to about 10 ft 6 in by 13 ft 10 in, and nine are runners. Each rug is one of a kind, with its exact measurements on its own page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

The person behind the piece

β€œBefore you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light β€” not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”

I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing β€” and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.

Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
