How to Get Vomit Out of a Rug, and the Smell With It
Nobody looks up how to get vomit out of a rug at a good moment, so this will be brief and practical. Whether it came from a child, a guest or a pet, the job has three parts: remove what is on the surface without pushing it in, clean the stain, and deal with the smell. Speed matters more than usual, because stomach acid and the colourings in food and pet kibble can mark dyes if they sit. Everything below is safe for wool, including hand-knotted rugs. Put on gloves and start.

Lift first, then blot
Remove the solids before anything else. Use a spoon, a dustpan or two pieces of stiff card, scooping from the edges towards the middle and lifting upward. Do not press down and do not wipe, which pushes it into the base of the pile. Drop everything into a bag and take it outside.
Now blot the wet area with paper towel, pressing straight down, until little more comes up. If the patch is large, lay several sheets over it and stand on them. The less liquid left in the wool at this point, the easier the rest becomes.
Cleaning the stain with cold water and soap
Pour a small amount of cold water on the area and blot it out. Repeat two or three times. Use cold water only: vomit contains protein, and warmth sets protein into fibre. Then mix a few drops of mild dish soap or wool detergent into a cup of cold water, dab it on, leave it for five minutes and blot.
Rinse by dabbing with clean cold water and blot again. If a yellowish or coloured mark is left, which is common with pet food, repeat the soap step once or twice. Each round lightens it. Avoid scrubbing brushes, which roughen wool and spread the stain.
Dealing with the smell
After cleaning, dab the area with one part white vinegar to two parts cold water, wait five to ten minutes and blot. Vinegar cuts the sour smell and is gentle on wool. Rinse lightly with cold water and blot as dry as you can.
Prop that part of the rug off the floor so air moves underneath, and let it dry completely. Then sprinkle dry baking soda over the spot, leave it overnight and vacuum it up slowly. If any odour is left the next day, repeat the vinegar and baking soda steps. A smell that survives two rounds means liquid reached the foundation of the rug.
What to avoid on a wool rug
No hot water, no steam cleaner and no hair dryer on high. Heat fixes the stain and the smell, and can shrink and felt wool. No bleach or disinfectant containing chlorine, which destroys the fibre. Ordinary laundry detergent and many enzyme-based pet cleaners contain enzymes that attack protein, and wool is protein; use them only if the label says they are safe for wool.
If you want to disinfect, do it to the floor under the rug and to the tools you used, not to the wool. Wash the cloths on a hot cycle or throw them away. On the rug itself, thorough cleaning and complete drying are what count.
When the smell lingers
If the accident soaked through, lift the rug and check the pad and the floor. A pad that absorbed liquid will keep the smell going however clean the rug is, and may need washing or replacing. For a rug that still smells after it has been cleaned twice and dried properly, a full wash by a rug-cleaning specialist flushes out what home methods cannot reach.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- How do you get the smell of vomit out of a wool rug?
- Clean with cold water and mild soap, dab with diluted white vinegar, dry completely, then leave dry baking soda on overnight and vacuum.
- Should I use hot water on vomit?
- No. Heat sets the protein and the smell into the fibre. Use cold water throughout.
- How do I remove a yellow stain left by pet vomit?
- Repeat the mild soap step two or three times with cold-water rinses. Old or large stains may need a specialist.
- Can I use disinfectant on a wool rug?
- Avoid chlorine-based products, which destroy wool. Clean and dry the rug thoroughly, and disinfect the floor and tools instead.

The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is a one-off, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
