Beni Mguild Rug: Deep Colour from the Middle Atlas

Last updated

A Beni Mguild rug is the dark, saturated counterpart to the pale Beni Ourain. It comes from the same mountains, the Middle Atlas, from the country of the Beni Mguild tribes around Azrou and Khenifra, and it shares the same thick wool pile. What sets it apart is colour: fields of deep red, burgundy, blue and violet, with simple geometric drawing in a lighter tone. Where a Beni Ourain brightens a room, a Beni Mguild warms and encloses it. This page describes the type, explains how to use such a strong colour, and sets out exactly which pieces we have.

What defines a Beni Mguild rug

Colour first. The ground is dyed, typically in reds from brick to burgundy, in blues, or in the purples that lie between the two. Older pieces are often admired for the way these colours have softened to rose, plum and faded denim.

The design is restrained: a diamond lattice, horizontal bands, stacked lozenges or broad blocks of colour, usually in one or two contrasting tones. Compared with an Azilal there is far less going on. The effect is of a field of colour with a pattern floating in it.

Long formats

Many Beni Mguild rugs are long in proportion: wide enough for a room, and half as long again as you expect. That format is awkward in a square room and exactly right in others.

A rug of about 6 ft 6 in by 13 ft suits a long living room, the space between a kitchen island and a dining table, a wide hall or gallery, or the side of a bed in a large bedroom. Measure the room before falling for one, and remember to leave a margin of floor at both ends.

Using a dark, saturated rug

A deep red or blue rug changes a room more than any pale one. It absorbs light, so use it where there is plenty, or where you want the evening warmth of a den or a library. Pale walls and upholstery let the colour glow. Dark furniture on a dark rug disappears.

Burgundy pairs with camel, tan leather, olive, cream and brass. Deep blue pairs with white, grey, oak and rust. Both hide red wine, coffee and mud far better than ivory does, and both show lint and pale pet hair. A patterned piece hides the most of all.

The choice is between warmth and light. They are the same kind of object, thick wool pile from the same region, in opposite moods. In a small or north-facing room the ivory rug is the safer one. In a large, bright room that feels bare or cold, the coloured one does more.

They also combine well in one house: ivory in the bedroom, burgundy in the study. If you like the idea of colour but not a whole field of it, a Beni Mrirt in terracotta or camel sits between the two.

The Beni Mguild rugs in this selection

Eleven rugs. Six are in burgundy and wine reds, four in blue, from navy to cobalt, and one in teal. Four have diamonds or a diamond lattice, three are built from blocks of colour and two have horizontal bands. One is a gradient running from burgundy through orange, and one is scattered with signs in coral, gold and cream.

Seven are long, between 5 ft 8 in and 7 ft 3 in wide and 10 ft 10 in to 13 ft 10 in long. The other four are smaller, from 5 ft by 7 ft 10 in to 6 ft 7 in by 9 ft 6 in. Each rug is one of a kind, with its exact measurements on its own page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked

Questions

What is a Beni Mguild rug?
A hand-knotted wool rug from the Beni Mguild tribes of Morocco's Middle Atlas, known for deep reds, blues and purples.
How is a Beni Mguild different from a Beni Ourain?
Both are thick wool rugs from the Middle Atlas. A Beni Ourain is ivory with dark lines. A Beni Mguild has a deeply coloured ground.
Does a dark rug make a room look smaller?
It can in a small or dim room. In a large, bright room it adds warmth and anchors the furniture.
What sizes are Beni Mguild rugs?
Often long. Seven of our eleven are between about 11 and 14 feet long.

The person behind the piece

β€œBefore you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light β€” not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”

I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing β€” and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.

Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
