Cream Rug: Ivory, Off-White and White Wool, Knotted by Hand

Last updated

A cream rug is the most asked-for rug there is, and the name covers more than one colour. Cream, ivory, off-white and white are four different things on a floor, and in wool none of them is the hard, bright white of a synthetic. They are the colours of fleece: soft, slightly warm, a little different from one rug to the next. That is exactly why they are easy to live with. This page brings together our pale rugs, all hand-knotted in Morocco: Beni Ourain with dark diamonds on ivory, dense Beni Mrirt in cream, and Azilal with coloured drawing on an off-white ground.

Cream, ivory, off-white, white: telling them apart

White, in the sense of printer paper, exists in natural fibres only after bleaching. Sheep's wool is a broken white from the start. Cream is its warmest version, with a clear note of yellow. Ivory is a shade cooler and paler. Off-white is the most neutral, leaning neither warm nor grey.

The difference matters most next to paint. Beside brilliant white walls and trim, a cream rug looks rich and deliberate, while an optical white rug would turn bluish. Beside warm greige or sand walls, ivory is the natural match. When several pale surfaces meet, compare them in daylight before you commit, because two off-whites that nearly agree are harder to live with than two that clearly differ.

Three kinds of pale rug

The Beni Ourain is the best known: a long, soft ivory pile carrying a loose lattice of diamonds in brown or black. The drawing is sparse and never quite regular, which is why it sits as happily in a modern flat as in an old house.

The Beni Mrirt is more tightly knotted and heavier. Many are a single field of cream, or carry a pattern of ribs and lines in the same tone that shows only when light falls across it. The Azilal has a lower pile and treats its pale ground as paper for free drawing in colour. Choose it when you want the lightness of a white rug without the emptiness.

What a pale rug does on different floors

On dark boards or dark tile, a cream rug is a strong contrast that organises the whole room: the seating group stands on an island of light. Here the rug should be generous, or it will look like a patch.

On pale oak, limed boards or light stone, a cream rug needs something to separate it from the floor. Depth of pile can do it, since a thick rug stands out by its surface alone. So can a dark line or lattice. Tone on tone works when the materials differ clearly: smooth timber below, deep wool above.

Living with cream

The question everyone asks is how it stays clean. Part of the answer is the fibre. Liquid beads on wool for a few minutes before it sinks in, and dry dirt sits loosely in the pile until it is vacuumed out. The rest is habit: in a household where outdoor shoes stop at the door, a pale wool rug stays presentable for years.

Placement helps as well. Cream is at ease in sitting rooms and bedrooms and harder work under a dining table or by the front door. If the house is busy, choose a pale rug with drawing on it. A Beni Ourain's dark lines or an Azilal's coloured marks draw the eye away from the small things.

Care, and the rugs in this selection

Vacuum weekly with suction only. Blot spills at once with a white cloth and cold water. Never use bleach: it damages wool and turns it yellow. Strong direct sun warms the tone of pale wool slightly over the years, so turn the rug twice a year. A new rug sheds a little fluff for the first months.

The selection runs from narrow runners to rugs of about 10 Γ— 13 ft 8 in. Beni Mrirt pieces are the most numerous, then Azilal, then Beni Ourain. Each rug is one of a kind, with its measured size on its page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked

Questions

Is a cream rug a mistake with children or pets?
Not if it has some pattern and shoes come off indoors. Wool resists spills briefly and vacuums clean. A plain cream rug under a dining table is the demanding case; a patterned one in a sitting room is easy.
What is the difference between a cream rug and an ivory rug?
Cream is warmer and a little yellower, ivory slightly cooler and paler. Both are natural off-whites. True bright white only comes from bleaching or from synthetic fibre.
Do white wool rugs turn yellow?
Strong sunlight can warm the tone a little over many years, and rotating the rug keeps that even. Bleach and alkaline cleaners cause yellowing quickly and should never be used.
Which cream rug goes with a grey sofa?
An ivory or off-white rug, cooler than cream, with dark lines if you want definition. Add wood or a warm textile so that the grey and the white do not feel cold together.

The person behind the piece

β€œBefore you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light β€” not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”

I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing β€” and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.

Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
