Navy Rug: Deep Blue Wool Rugs and How to Use Them

Last updated

A navy rug does for a room what a navy jacket does for a wardrobe: it goes with nearly everything and makes whatever is next to it look sharper. It is dark enough to ground a space and hide the traces of daily life, yet it never reads as black. In wool, navy looks deep and slightly uneven, which keeps a dark floor from looking flat. This page explains how a navy blue rug behaves in a room, what to put with it, and which deep blue rugs we have, described as they are.

What a navy rug does to a room

Dark floors pull a room together. A navy rug gives the furniture a base to stand on, so a pale sofa or a light wood table looks more deliberate against it. It also makes white walls look whiter. In a large, bright room this is all gain.

In a small or north-facing room, a big expanse of navy absorbs light and can make the floor feel like a hole. There, choose a navy rug with cream bands or a pale pattern, or keep the rug smaller and leave a margin of lighter floor around it. Navy with a second colour reads much lighter than navy alone.

Colours that go with navy blue

Navy is close to a neutral. With white and cream it is crisp and coastal. With tan leather, camel and oak it turns warm and tailored. With grey it is quiet and urban. All three directions are safe, and they can be mixed.

For contrast, look to the warm side of the colour wheel: rust, terracotta, coral, mustard and brass all glow next to navy. A navy rug with small coral or gold motifs does this work for you. Pink and navy is a gentler pairing that suits bedrooms. The one thing to avoid is black upholstery directly on a navy rug, because the two dark tones blur into each other.

Navy and everyday life

A navy rug hides most stains better than any pale rug: coffee, wine, mud. What it shows is the opposite kind of dirt, the light kind: lint, crumbs, dust and pale pet hair. If you have a white dog, navy is hard work. A rug with pattern or banding hides both sorts far better than a plain one.

Dark wool also shows footprints and vacuum tracks as lighter and darker patches, because the pile reflects light differently depending on which way it lies. This is called shading. It is normal in any deep-coloured pile rug, and it shifts as you walk across it. Strong sun slowly softens any deep blue, so rotate the rug twice a year.

Which rooms suit a navy rug

Living rooms first, especially under a light sofa. Dining rooms, where a dark rug forgives what falls from the table. Studies and libraries, where navy with wood and leather is a classic combination. Hallways too, if the runner has a pattern.

In a bedroom navy is restful, but use it with pale bedding and warm lamps so that the room does not turn cold. In a child's room it makes a good base for bright colour and survives felt-tip pens better than cream does. Size it like any other rug: the front legs of the seating on the rug, or two feet of rug showing on each side of a bed.

The navy and deep blue rugs in this selection

Six rugs, described as they are. Two are true navy: a Beni Mguild with cream bands at 5 ft by 7 ft 10 in, and a Beni Mguild with blocks of coral at 5 ft 11 in by 8 ft 10 in. Two are cobalt blue Beni Mguild rugs in a long format, about 6 ft 6 in wide: one with scattered signs in coral, gold and cream, 12 ft 8 in long, and one with a coral diamond lattice, 13 ft 10 in long.

The last two are plain: an azure Azilal at 6 ft 7 in by 10 ft, and an indigo Beni Mrirt with a ribbed texture at 8 ft 6 in by 10 ft 10 in. If you need navy in another size, our bespoke studio makes a rug in the ground colour and measurements you choose. Each rug is one of a kind, with its exact measurements on its own page. Frequently Asked

Questions

What colours go with a navy rug?
White, cream, grey, tan and oak for a calm room, and rust, coral, mustard and brass for contrast.
Does a navy rug make a room look smaller?
A large plain navy rug can darken a small room. Choose one with cream bands or pattern, or leave lighter floor showing around it.
Do navy rugs show dirt?
They hide dark stains well and show lint, crumbs and pale pet hair. Pattern helps with both.
Is navy blue the same as indigo?
Navy is a very dark blue. Indigo is a little brighter and can lean towards violet. Our selection includes both and says which is which.

The person behind the piece

“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”

I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.

Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
