Small Rug: Hand-Knotted Wool Rugs up to 35 Square Feet
Last updated
A small rug is the easiest piece of hand-knotted work to bring into a home. It needs no measuring of sofas and no rearranging of rooms. It goes where a floor wants something: by the bed, at the door, under a chair, along a corridor. It is also where most people start with wool, before committing to a large rug. This page gathers everything we have up to about 35 square feet, knotted by hand in Morocco: colourful Azilal rugs of roughly 3 Γ 5 ft, a few slightly larger pieces, and a wide choice of runners.

Three small formats and what each is for
The accent rug, about 3 Γ 5 ft, is for one spot: beside a bed, in front of an armchair, inside the door of a flat. You stand on it comfortably with both feet and it takes a side table. Most of ours at this size are Azilal, bright and light.
A step up, from about 4 ft 5 in Γ 6 ft to 4 ft 4 in Γ 8 ft, holds a loveseat by its front legs or a small desk. And then there are runners, 2 ft 4 in to 3 ft 1 in wide and mostly about 10 ft long: for halls and landings, the foot of a bed, the strip in front of a bookcase. They count as small by area, not by length.
How to stop a small rug looking lost
Lay a small rug loose in the middle of a room and the rug looks smaller and the room messier. The answer is to attach it to furniture. Let the front legs of a chair or a sofa stand on it, set it tight against the bed frame, or put a table on it. Once rug and furniture touch, the rug has a reason to be there.
The other approach is to layer it. Put the small rug, slightly askew, on a larger flat one of jute or sisal. A big room can be dressed that way with a piece that would be too small alone, and the drawing shows to advantage. Use a non-slip layer between the two.
At small sizes, be bold
On a large rug, a quiet tone is the careful choice. A small rug cannot dominate, so bright colour and daring pattern are just right. In a room of white walls and simple furniture, a colourful rug acts as a painting on the floor, and it can be changed for another without redecorating.
Most of the small rugs here are Azilal pieces: a pale ground with lines, diamonds and signs in several colours, knotted freehand. If you would sooner have calm, there are small Beni Mrirt rugs and runners in ivory, sand and camel, thick, and plain or with a light lattice.
Grip and care
The smaller and lighter the rug, the more readily it slides. On timber, laminate, vinyl and tile, always use a non-slip pad underneath, cut a little smaller than the rug. Beside a bed, where it is stepped on by someone half asleep, that is no minor point.
Beyond that, small wool rugs are undemanding. Vacuum weekly without a beater bar and shake them outdoors from time to time. Blot marks with cold water and a white cloth. They do not go in a washing machine. For a full wash, a specialist is the place.
The small rugs in this selection
Azilal rugs are by far the most numerous, followed by Beni Mrirt. Multicoloured pieces lead, then ivory and sand. The smallest measure about 3 ft 2 in Γ 4 ft 6 in, the largest that are not runners about 4 ft 4 in Γ 8 ft, and the runners, roughly half the group, are 2 ft 4 in to 3 ft 1 in wide.
Every rug is knotted by hand and one of a kind, with its measured size on its page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- What size rug goes beside a bed?
- About 2 ft 6 in to 3 ft 6 in wide and 4 ft 6 in to 5 ft long. It need not follow the whole length of the bed. It should lie where your feet land.
- Can a small rug work in a living room?
- As an accent, yes: in front of a chair, under a side table or layered on a bigger rug. As the only rug under the seating it is too small. That needs at least 5 Γ 8 ft.
- Do small rugs slide on hardwood floors?
- Without a non-slip pad, yes. Use a pad slightly smaller than the rug. It is safer, and the rug stays flat.
- What is the easiest way to start with a wool rug?
- With a small one. An accent rug or a runner lets you live with hand-knotted wool, its feel and its upkeep, before you choose a large rug for the main room.

The person behind the piece
βBefore you buy, Iβll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light β not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.β
Iβm Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing β and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, Iβm on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
