The back-of-rug test remains the single most reliable tell: a true hand-knotted rug shows individual knots visible on the reverse, the pattern legible from both sides; a tufted rug shows a uniform latex or canvas backing with no knot visibility. Provenance documentation matters at this price point — co-operative name, weaver names where available, wool source altitude, and approximate start/completion dates should all be specifiable.
