Azilal Rug: Colour and Free Drawing from the High Atlas

Last updated

An Azilal rug is the most exuberant of the Moroccan rug types. Where a Beni Ourain keeps to ivory and a few dark lines, an Azilal fills the field with coloured diamonds, zigzags, checkerboards and small signs, often in pinks, oranges, blues and yellows together. The type takes its name from the province of Azilal in the central High Atlas. These rugs are lighter than their Middle Atlas cousins and freer in drawing, and each one reads as the work of a single imagination. This page explains what defines an Azilal rug, how it differs from related types, and how to use one in a room.

What defines an Azilal rug

Three things: colour, freedom and lightness. The palette is wide and unafraid, with several strong colours in one piece, usually on an ivory ground and sometimes covering it entirely. The drawing is improvised. Motifs change size, lines break off, and a row of diamonds turns into something else halfway up.

The rug is also lighter in the hand than a Beni Ourain or a Beni Mrirt, which makes it easy to move, to lay over another rug or to hang. Because no two weavers draw alike, Azilal rugs vary more from piece to piece than any other Moroccan type.

Azilal, Beni Ourain and Boucherouite

People often mix up three types. A Beni Ourain is ivory with dark lines, thick and calm. An Azilal shares the ivory ground in many cases but adds colour and far more pattern. If a rug looks like a Beni Ourain that someone has drawn on in coloured pencil, it is probably an Azilal.

A Boucherouite is a different thing: a rag rug made from strips of recycled cloth and not from wool, brighter and rougher still. Azilal rugs are wool pile rugs. The confusion arises because both are colourful and both come from the same broad region.

Where an Azilal rug works

An Azilal is the rug for a room that needs life. In a white or neutral interior it is the one thing that carries colour, and it makes the furniture around it look intended. It suits children's rooms, studies, hallways and any living room that feels too polite.

Its busy surface is forgiving. Crumbs, pet hair and the odd stain disappear among the motifs, which makes it a practical family rug. Keep what is near it simple: a plain sofa, plain curtains. Take two colours from the rug for cushions and leave the rest alone.

Choosing among Azilal rugs

Decide first how much colour you want. Some Azilal rugs are mostly ivory with a few coloured signs and can be treated almost as neutrals. Others are saturated from edge to edge. Look at the proportion of ground to pattern, and at whether the colours are warm, cool or mixed.

Then look at the drawing. A diamond lattice gives order. Scattered signs give playfulness. Blocks and bands of colour read as abstract painting. Because each rug is so individual, choose the one you keep going back to. With this type that instinct is usually right.

The Azilal rugs in this selection

One hundred and twenty rugs. Seventy-four are multicoloured and twenty-four have an ivory or cream ground with pattern, with smaller numbers in faded vintage tones, terracotta, pink and gold. Diamonds lead the design in fifty-five, lines or bands in twenty-three, scattered signs in sixteen and blocks of colour in twelve.

Fifty-six measure around 6 ft 7 in by 9 ft 10 in. Twenty-two are mid-sized, twenty-two are small, at about 3 ft 3 in by 5 ft, and twenty are runners. Each rug is one of a kind, with its exact measurements on its own page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked

Questions

What is an Azilal rug?
A hand-knotted wool rug from the Azilal region of Morocco's High Atlas, known for free, colourful designs.
What is the difference between Azilal and Beni Ourain?
Beni Ourain rugs are ivory with dark lines and thicker. Azilal rugs are lighter and add colour and more pattern.
Are Azilal rugs good for families?
Yes. Their colour and pattern hide marks well, and wool is resilient.
Is an Azilal rug the same as a Boucherouite?
No. Azilal rugs are wool. Boucherouite rugs are made from strips of recycled fabric.

The person behind the piece

β€œBefore you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light β€” not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”

I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing β€” and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.

Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
