5x7 Rug: Hand-Knotted Wool for Apartments and Small Living Rooms
Last updated
A 5x7 rug is the first size that can carry furniture. Below it, a rug is an accent. At five by seven it holds a loveseat and a small table, or fills a compact bedroom, or settles a home office. It is the size for apartments, first homes and second sitting rooms. Our selection at this size is small, and each piece is different: a few dense Beni Mrirt rugs in ivory, sand and charcoal, and a couple of lighter Azilal. They measure from about 4 ft 10 in × 6 ft 6 in up to 5 ft 6 in wide and 7 ft 6 in long, all wool, all knotted by hand in Morocco.

What a 5x7 holds
In a small living room: a loveseat or a compact sofa up to about six feet, with its front legs on the rug, and a coffee table in the middle. One armchair can join if it is angled in. With a full three-seater, the rug no longer shows at the ends and starts to look like a mat, which is the signal to move up a size.
In a bedroom, a 5 × 7 beside a queen bed covers the whole of one flank. Under a twin bed laid crossways it shows generously on both sides. In a home office it takes a desk with the chair standing in front of it on bare floor. In a nursery it is the play rug.
5x7, 5x8 or 6x9
The three sizes are close, and the choice turns on a single measurement: the length of your sofa. Add about a foot to it. If the result is seven feet or less, a 5 × 7 will do. If it comes to eight, look at 5 × 8. If the sofa is seven feet long itself, you need 6 × 9.
Width decides the rest. A 5-foot rug suits narrow rooms and leaves a walkway clear. Where the room has depth to spare, six feet lets the coffee table sit with space around it. Tape the outlines on the floor before choosing. On this scale a difference of twelve inches is easy to see.
Pile and colour in a small room
A small room magnifies whatever is on its floor. A pale rug with an open drawing, mostly ivory with a few lines, makes the room feel larger. A dark, dense pattern can weigh it down, though a charcoal rug with a clear cream border has a graphic strength that suits a study or a den.
As for pile, a thick rug does a great deal in a small space. It absorbs sound, which matters where walls are close, and it turns the floor into seating. If doors open over it, measure the gap first. The Azilal pieces have a lower pile and are the easier choice where clearance is tight.
Getting a small layout right
Lay the rug with its long side parallel to the sofa and push it a few inches underneath. That ties sofa and table together. A rug floating in the centre of the room with the furniture standing round it makes the space look smaller.
Keep at least 8 inches of floor between rug and wall. In a narrow room, let the rug sit off-centre towards the seating if that keeps the walkway on bare floor. And put a pad under it: at this size a rug is light enough to creep.
The rugs in this selection
There are only a few. The Beni Mrirt pieces are heavy and quietly drawn: one in sand with loose diamond forms, two in ivory with a charcoal drawing, and one with a charcoal border around a cream centre. The Azilal pieces are lighter, one ivory with coloured lines, one multicoloured. The group changes as rugs are sold.
Measured sizes are given with each rug. If you find nothing here, the 5 × 8 selection holds more pieces of the same width and a little more length. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- How big is a 5x7 rug in centimetres?
- About 152 × 213 cm. The hand-knotted pieces shown here measure roughly 147 to 167 cm wide and 199 to 228 cm long.
- Is a 5x7 rug big enough for a living room?
- For a small one with a loveseat or a sofa up to about six feet, yes. With a standard three-seater, 5 × 8 or 6 × 9 ft fits better.
- What is the difference between a 5x7 and a 5x8 rug?
- One foot of length. That foot decides whether the rug still shows at both ends of the sofa. Measure the sofa, add a foot, and pick the size that covers it.
- Does a 5x7 rug fit under a queen bed?
- Only partly. It works better beside the bed or at the foot. For a rug that shows on both sides of a queen, choose 8 × 10 ft.

The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
