Gold Rug and Mustard Rug: Saffron, Ochre and Caramel in Wool
A gold rug in wool is not metallic. There is no shine to it and no thread of lurex. What you get is the gold of saffron, turmeric and ripe wheat: a warm, matt yellow that glows rather than glitters. That makes it one of the most useful colours for a floor, because it brings sunlight into a room without the hardness of a primary yellow. The rugs on this page are hand-knotted in Morocco and range from clear saffron through mustard and ochre to a deep caramel. Most are dense Beni Mrirt pieces; a few are brighter Azilal.

Mustard, ochre, saffron, caramel: reading the shades
Saffron is the clearest and brightest of the group, a true golden yellow. Mustard has a touch of green and brown in it, which is why it sits so easily beside wood and leather. Ochre is earthier still, the colour of dry clay. Caramel leans towards brown and behaves almost like a warm neutral.
The names matter less than the direction. The brighter and cleaner the yellow, the more the rug becomes the subject of the room. The browner and deeper it is, the more it works as a background that simply feels warm. If you are unsure, mustard and caramel are the forgiving choices.
Why yellow needs a matt surface
Yellow is the colour most easily cheapened by shine. On viscose or polyester it reflects light like plastic, and a large area of it becomes tiring. Wool absorbs light. The same hue on a wool pile looks dusty and deep, closer to a spice than to a highlighter.
Hand-spun yarn adds a second advantage. Because it varies in thickness, the dye takes unevenly, and a field of mustard breaks into warmer and cooler patches. On a big rug this is what keeps the colour from looking like a single painted slab, and it is why these pieces can be used at living-room scale.
What goes with a mustard or gold rug
Blue is the natural partner. Navy, denim and petrol sit opposite yellow on the colour wheel, and each makes the other look richer: a navy sofa on a mustard rug is one of the safest strong combinations there is. Grey is the quiet alternative, especially a warm grey or greige.
Dark green, charcoal and black give depth; white and cream keep it fresh. Wood tones are easy, with one warning. A yellow-toned oak floor under a mustard rug leaves the rug without an edge. Choose a rug clearly deeper than the boards, or one with a cream lattice, so that it stands out from the floor.
Rooms where yellow earns its place
North-facing rooms and rooms that see little sun gain the most. A golden floor does for them what no white paint can, because it adds warmth from below, where the eye does not expect it. In a grey or white living room, a mustard rug is often the one decision that stops the space feeling cold.
In a hallway, a saffron runner turns a passage into something you notice. In a bedroom, caramel is calmer than brighter yellows and pairs well with white linen. Under a dining table, the deeper shades have a practical side: they are kind to crumbs.
Large yellow and gold rugs
Yellow is a colour people usually try small, in a cushion or a runner, and then wish they had gone further. On a large rug the right tone matters more than the size: mustard, gold-brown and caramel can cover a hundred square feet and simply make the room warmer, while a clear lemon would dominate it. A grey or navy sofa is the natural partner, with white walls and oak. One large warm rug is often all the colour a north-facing living room needs.
Four of our rugs in this family are large Beni Mrirt pieces. Three are near 8 × 10 ft, between 8 ft 2 in and 8 ft 8 in wide and 10 ft 2 in to 10 ft 6 in long: a plain deep-pile caramel, a caramel with a cream diamond lattice and a caramel with a grid of rectangles. The fourth is a golden mustard with a bold cream lattice at 9 ft 11 in × 13 ft 5 in. A golden yellow rug with scattered graphic forms, 6 ft 10 in × 10 ft 4 in, is the size below.
The rugs in this selection
The Beni Mrirt pieces are thick and heavy, in caramel and golden mustard, plain or crossed by a wide lattice or grid. One has a bold graphic drawing in golden yellow. The Azilal rugs are lighter in pile and brighter: a saffron runner with small diamonds, and a rug built from horizontal bands of yellow, cream, grey and dusty rose.
Sizes run from a runner of about 2 ft 6 in × 10 ft to a rug of roughly 10 × 13 ft. Each is one of a kind, with exact measurements on its page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- What colours go with a mustard rug?
- Blue in every depth, from denim to navy, is the classic partner. Greys, greige, cream, dark green and charcoal also work well. Keep other yellows in the room to a minimum.
- Is a gold wool rug shiny?
- No. Wool is matt, so gold appears as saffron, ochre or mustard rather than as a metallic sheen. If you want glitter, wool is the wrong fibre; if you want warmth, it is the right one.
- Is a yellow rug hard to live with?
- Less than people fear. Mid-toned mustard and caramel hide dust and crumbs well, and wool is slow to soil. Pale lemon yellows show more, which is why the deeper shades are the practical ones.
- Does mustard work with a grey sofa?
- Very well. Grey calms the yellow and the yellow warms the grey. Add wood or a little black so that the room has more than two tones.

The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is a one-off, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
