6x9 Rug: Hand-Knotted Wool for the Mid-Sized Room

Last updated

A 6x9 rug is the size people overlook on the way from 5 × 8 to 8 × 10, and it is often the one their room actually wants. It takes a full sofa with its front legs on the wool, leaves a walkway behind, and does not crowd a room of ordinary depth. It is also the most useful size for a bedroom with a queen bed. The rugs on this page are our pieces nearest to six by nine, knotted by hand in Morocco in wool, from about 5 ft 9 in to 6 ft 9 in wide and 8 ft 4 in to 9 ft 2 in long.

What fits on a 6x9

A sofa of up to about seven and a half feet, front legs on, with a coffee table and one armchair. Two chairs if they are small. The rug shows at both ends of the sofa and reaches far enough forward for feet to rest on it from every seat.

In a bedroom, lay it crossways under a queen bed and it leaves about two feet of rug on each side, which is the comfortable minimum. Under a full bed it is generous. Under a dining table it suits a small round or square table for two to four. With six chairs, the back legs will drop off the edge.

The room a 6x9 suits

Rooms of about 10 × 12 ft to 12 × 14 ft. In a room ten feet deep, an 8 × 10 would leave barely a foot of floor at the walls, and the rug would start to read as fitted carpet. A 6 × 9 keeps a proper border and lets the floor frame it.

It is also the right answer for a room with a walkway along one side: a living room you cross to reach a balcony, or one that opens onto a kitchen. The narrower rug keeps the route on hard floor, where traffic belongs, and the seating on wool.

6x9 against 5x8 and 8x10

Against a 5 × 8, a 6 × 9 adds a foot each way, which is a third more rug. That extra foot of depth is what lets a coffee table sit with space on both sides. If your sofa is longer than seven feet, the smaller rug will not show at its ends.

Against an 8 × 10, the 6 × 9 gives up two feet of width. Choose the larger size if you want armchairs fully on the rug or if the room is more than twelve feet deep. Choose the 6 × 9 when the larger outline, taped on the floor, comes within a foot of a wall or runs into a doorway.

Three characters at this size

The pieces we have near six by nine fall into three kinds. The Beni Mrirt rugs are dense and heavy, in sand and ivory, with little or no drawing. They are the quiet option and the softest underfoot.

The Beni Mguild rugs carry deep colour, one in wine red and one in dark blue, across a largely open field. They suit a room that wants warmth and weight. The Azilal rugs are lighter in pile and multicoloured on a pale ground, the choice when the rug is to be the liveliest thing in the room.

The rugs in this selection

It is a compact group, and each piece is different. Measured sizes run from about 5 ft 9 in × 8 ft 4 in to 6 ft 9 in × 9 ft 2 in. If you need a little more length with similar width, the 7 × 10 selection, which is much larger, continues from here.

Each rug is one of a kind, photographed as it is, with its exact dimensions on its page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked

Questions

How big is a 6x9 rug in centimetres?
About 183 × 274 cm. The hand-knotted pieces shown here measure roughly 175 to 205 cm wide and 253 to 280 cm long.
Is a 6x9 rug big enough for a living room?
For a room of about 10 × 12 ft with a sofa up to seven and a half feet, yes. In larger rooms or with armchairs you want fully on the rug, 8 × 10 ft is the better size.
Does a 6x9 rug work under a queen bed?
Yes. Laid crossways, it leaves about two feet on each side of a queen bed. For a king, choose 8 × 10 ft or larger.
Can I use a 6x9 rug under a dining table?
Only under a small table for two to four. A table for six needs a rug of about 8 × 10 ft so the chairs stay on it when pulled out.

The person behind the piece

“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”

I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.

Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
