Beni Ourain vs Azilal: Which Moroccan Rug Suits Your Room

Last updated

Beni Ourain vs Azilal is the choice most people face when they first look at Moroccan rugs, because the two types sit at opposite ends of the same tradition. Both are knotted by hand in wool by Amazigh weavers in the Atlas Mountains. Both are improvised at the loom, without a drawn plan. One is quiet: ivory, a few dark lines, a deep pile. The other is lively: colour, signs, movement, a lighter hand. This page compares them point by point, says which rooms each suits, and gives a simple way to decide. We hold both, and have no reason to steer you.

Where they come from

Beni Ourain rugs come from the north-eastern Middle Atlas, from a group of tribes of that name. Azilal rugs come from the province of Azilal in the central High Atlas, further south. Both regions are mountain country with cold winters, and wool is the material of both.

The names describe traditions and not brands. Weavers in each region have their own habits of colour and drawing, and the borders between types are soft. A rug sold as Azilal may have been made a valley away from one sold under another name.

Colour and design

A Beni Ourain is ivory or cream, with drawing in dark brown or black: a lattice of diamonds, a few crossing lines, sometimes almost nothing. There is no border and little or no colour. The design is spare, and the eye rests on it.

An Azilal often starts from the same pale ground and then departs from it. Diamonds are filled with pink, orange, blue and yellow. Small signs appear between them. Lines zigzag. Some Azilal rugs are coloured from edge to edge. The design is busy, and the eye travels.

Pile and handle

Beni Ourain is the type known for a thick, soft pile. The rug is heavy, lies firmly on the floor and is very comfortable to sit or lie on. It gives a room warmth and quiet.

Azilal rugs are generally lighter. They are easier to move, to fold and to hang, and they sit well under furniture and in smaller rooms. Underfoot they are less plush. Neither type is more durable in principle: both are hand-knotted wool, and both last when they are cared for.

Beni Ourain vs Azilal by room

Choose Beni Ourain for rooms where calm and comfort lead: a living room with strong furniture or art, a main bedroom, a minimalist or Scandinavian interior. It is a background that makes other things look good. Accept that ivory shows spills, and keep it away from the dining table if there are small children.

Choose Azilal for rooms that need energy or forgiveness: a family room, a child's room, a study, a hallway, a white rented flat. Its pattern hides daily life, and its colour does the decorating. Keep the furniture near it plain.

How to decide, and what we hold

Ask what the room lacks. If it lacks peace, the answer is Beni Ourain. If it lacks life, Azilal. If you cannot decide, look at the Azilal rugs that are mostly ivory with a few coloured signs, which sit between the two.

We hold twenty-two Beni Ourain rugs, seventeen of them on an ivory or cream ground, and 120 Azilal rugs, of which seventy-four are multicoloured and twenty-four have an ivory ground. The rugs shown on this page come from our whole collection. Each rug is one of a kind, with its exact measurements on its own page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

The person behind the piece

“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”

I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.

Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
