Square Rug: Hand-Made Wool Squares, Woven to Your Size
A square rug is the right answer to a room that is square itself. Under a round or square table, between two sofas that face each other, in a bay window or a child's room, a square sits where a rectangle always has too much on one side and too little on the other. Hand-made rugs are almost always longer than they are wide, though, and the pieces we hold in stock are rectangles too. Square rugs are made to order by our atelier in Morocco, at the size you need. This guide covers where a square works, what size makes sense and how ordering goes.

Where a square rug is the best choice
The clearest case is the dining table. Under a round or square table, a square rug extends the same distance on all four sides, and every chair gets the same amount of floor. It is just as convincing in a living room that is close to square, where an oblong rug would make the room look lopsided.
Seating arranged in a U or with two sofas facing each other is also held better by a square than by a rectangle. In a nursery or playroom it gives a play area that reaches equally in every direction, and in a square foyer it fills the plan cleanly. It is less suited to long rooms and to a single sofa standing against a wall.
Which size: 5x5, 6x6, 8x8 or 10x10
A 5 × 5 ft square is an accent: for a reading corner, a child's room or a small entry. At 6 × 6 ft it becomes a living-room piece, right for a small seating group or a café-sized table. Under a dining table the usual rule applies: two feet of rug beyond the table on every side, so the table size plus four feet.
A 42-inch round table therefore needs about 7 ft 6 in square, and a 48-inch round or square table needs 8 × 8 ft. A 60-inch table calls for 9 × 9 ft. In a living room, an 8 × 8 holds two armchairs and a small sofa, and a 10 × 10 a full seating group. Mark the outline on the floor with painter's tape before you order.
Why ready-made square rugs are scarce
Technically a square is no trouble: it is a rectangle with equal sides. It is uncommon all the same, because of where these rugs come from. Berber rugs were knotted as bedding and covers, and for that an oblong shape is the natural one. Later, when weaving for sale began, the proportions stayed the same.
What the trade offers in square rugs is therefore almost always machine-made or cut from broadloom. If you want a square in hand-made wool, it generally has to be commissioned. The advantage is that the size follows your room and not a chart.
Square or round under a round table?
Both work, with different effects. A round rug repeats the outline of the table and makes the dining spot soft and self-contained. A square one ties the round table to the room: its edges run parallel to the walls, and the whole area looks ordered and anchored. In a room full of straight lines, the square is often the calmer answer.
There is a small practical gain as well. For the same width, a square offers more surface at the corners, so chairs pushed back at an angle are more likely to stay on the wool. Under a square table the question settles itself, since a rectangle would overhang too far on two sides and too little on the other two.
Commissioning in brief, and what is in stock
A square is woven for you as a commission through the bespoke atelier on this site. Give the same figure for width and for length, then settle the design, the colours, the yarn and the depth of pile. What the piece costs, delivery and duties counted in, and roughly how many weeks it will take are visible before you commit. Nothing is started until the atelier has agreed every detail with you.
Designs without a direction sit most calmly in a square: one colour, an even lattice, a checkerboard, a line running round the border. If your room can also take a slightly oblong rug, look at the pieces further down the page. They are single pieces, ready to send, each listed with its measured size.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- Can I buy a square rug from your stock?
- Not at present: every piece in stock is longer than it is wide. A square is woven for you on request, at exactly the size your room calls for.
- What size square rug goes under a round dining table?
- The table's diameter plus four feet, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. A 48-inch table needs an 8 × 8 ft rug.
- Should the rug under a round table be square or round?
- Round echoes the table and feels softer. Square links the table to the lines of the room and leaves more surface at the corners for chairs pushed back. In rooms with straight lines, square is usually the calmer choice.
- Is a square rug a good idea in a living room?
- In a room that is close to square, or with sofas facing each other, yes. In front of a single sofa against a wall, an oblong rug usually fits better.

The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is a one-off, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
