Azilal vs Boucherouite: Wool Rug or Rag Rug?
Last updated
Azilal vs boucherouite is a question people ask after seeing two very colourful Moroccan rugs side by side and wondering why they feel so different. The answer is material. An Azilal is a wool rug: yarn spun from fleece, dyed, and knotted into a pile. A boucherouite is a rag rug: strips of old clothing and cloth, knotted or woven in the same way. Everything else follows from that, from how they feel underfoot to how long they last and how they are cleaned. This page compares them on the points that matter when you are choosing.

Material and feel
Wool is springy. An Azilal has a pile that gives under your foot and comes back, feels warm, and is fairly even across the rug. It is what most people expect a rug to feel like.
A boucherouite is made of whatever fabrics went into it, so it can be soft in one patch and coarse in the next, thick here and thin there. Cotton and synthetic strips lie flatter than wool and feel cooler. Some people love the texture, and others find it rough under bare feet.
Look
Both are improvised and both are bright, but the colour behaves differently. In an Azilal the colours are dyed yarn, placed deliberately as diamonds, signs and bands, often on an ivory ground that gives the eye somewhere to rest.
In a boucherouite the colours come from the scrap pile, so prints, stripes and odd shades turn up inside the motifs, and there is seldom any plain ground at all. It is denser, louder and more accidental. An Azilal looks drawn. A boucherouite looks collaged.
Wear and care
A wool rug wears slowly and recovers. An Azilal can be vacuumed with suction only, spot-cleaned with cold water and wool detergent, washed by a specialist and repaired. Its behaviour is predictable.
A boucherouite is less predictable, because its fibres are mixed and its dyes are those of old clothes. It sheds threads, flattens with use and may bleed colour when wet. Gentle shaking and careful vacuuming are the safe routine, and any washing should be tested first. It is better as an accent than under daily traffic.
Size and use
Azilal rugs come in a full range, from small pieces to room-sized rugs of around 7 by 10 feet and long runners. They can anchor a living room or a bedroom.
Boucherouite rugs are usually small, a few feet each way. They suit a bathroom, a bedside, a hallway or a wall. If you need a rug for the middle of a room, the choice is made for you: it will be the Azilal, perhaps with a small boucherouite layered on top of it or hung nearby.
Azilal vs boucherouite: which to choose, and what we hold
Choose an Azilal for a main rug that will be walked and sat on every day, and that you can clean and keep. Choose a boucherouite for a small, vivid accent or for a wall, and buy it from someone who can tell you what it is made of.
We hold Azilal rugs and no boucherouite: 120 Azilal pieces, seventy-four of them multicoloured. Fifty-six measure around 6 ft 7 in by 9 ft 10 in, twenty-two are mid-sized, twenty-two are small and twenty are runners. Each rug is one of a kind, with its exact measurements on its own page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- What is the difference between Azilal and boucherouite rugs?
- An Azilal is knotted from wool yarn. A boucherouite is made from strips of recycled fabric.
- Which lasts longer?
- The wool Azilal. Rag pile flattens and frays sooner than wool.
- Which is softer underfoot?
- Usually the Azilal, because wool pile is springy and even.
- Do you sell both?
- We sell Azilal rugs. We do not hold boucherouite rugs.

The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
