Almost every new owner of a hand-knotted wool rug has the same first reaction: a small ball of wool appears beside the rug after the first vacuum, then another, then another, and a quiet panic sets in that the rug is somehow falling apart. It is not. Shedding is a normal, time-limited process that affects all hand-spun wool rugs to some degree, and it stops on its own within three to six months of regular use. Understanding why it happens — and what to do (mostly nothing) — saves new owners a lot of unnecessary worry.
What Shedding Actually Is
Hand-spun wool — the kind used in genuine Atlas Mountain Moroccan rugs — contains loose, unfinished fibre fragments that the spinning process did not fully twist into the yarn. These fragments sit inside the yarn structure and gradually work their way out during the first months of normal foot traffic and vacuuming. The rug itself does not lose any structural fibre; the knots remain fully intact. Only loose surface fragments are leaving.
Machine-spun wool yarn (used in factory rugs) sheds less because industrial spinning twists the fibres tighter and trims loose ends mechanically. Hand-spun yarn — which is structurally what makes an Atlas-woven rug feel and behave differently — is by definition less uniformly twisted. The shedding is a side effect of the same property that gives the rug its character.
How Long Shedding Lasts
Most new hand-knotted wool rugs shed visibly for 8 to 16 weeks of regular use, with the rate decreasing significantly after the first month. By month 4 to 6, shedding is no longer noticeable. Some buyers report intermittent very-low-level shedding (a few fibres after a deep vacuum) for up to a year, particularly in dry climates.
Vacuuming frequency affects the curve. A rug vacuumed twice a week will finish its shedding cycle faster than one vacuumed monthly, because you are simply removing loose fibres more efficiently. Both end up at the same point; frequent vacuuming gets there faster.
What to Do (and Not Do) About Shedding
Vacuum gently, weekly. Use suction only — beater bars (the rotating brush on standard upright vacuums) tear at knot tops and accelerate wear. Many vacuums have a switch to disengage the beater bar; if yours does not, vacuum with the hose attachment instead. Avoid the rug's fringe with the vacuum — fringe is structurally important and gets damaged easily.
Do not panic-brush or beat the rug to 'speed up' shedding. This actually loosens additional fibres that would otherwise have stayed in place. Just vacuum normally; the rug regulates its own shedding rate.
Do not return the rug or ask for a refund based on shedding. A retailer who accepts returns for shedding is signalling that they don't sell genuine hand-spun wool rugs. Shedding for the first months is a positive sign of authenticity.
When Shedding Is Actually a Problem
Three situations indicate shedding that is not normal. First: shedding that continues unchanged after 6–8 months of normal use. Second: shedding of full pile tufts (not loose fragments) — this indicates knot failure, usually from low-quality weaving or chemical wash damage. Third: a noticeable bald patch or thinning of the pile in the same area — this indicates either uneven wear or structural defect.
If any of these occur, contact the seller. A reputable Moroccan-rug retailer should examine photographs of the issue and either repair, replace, or refund depending on cause. Normal shedding of loose fibres is not in that category.
