Hand-Knotted Β· Atlas Mountains Β· Morocco
Every rug in our collection is hand-knotted by artisans in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Virgin wool. Natural dyes. Months of continuous work. The result is a textile that outlasts everything around it.
The Craft
No stage of the process is mechanised. Every step β from the raw wool to the finished rug β passes through human hands.
Shorn from sheep grazing above 2,000 metres in the Atlas Mountains. The altitude produces a denser fleece β naturally lanolin-rich, antimicrobial, and extraordinarily soft. Hand-carded. Hand-spun. Never chemically treated.
A vertical floor loom, unchanged for centuries. Warp threads stretched taut. The weaver sits cross-legged, tying each knot individually β a symmetric Turkish knot or an asymmetric Persian knot, depending on the tradition of her village.
Between 40,000 and 160,000 knots per square metre. Each one tied by hand, cut with a small blade, beaten down with an iron comb. A large rug can contain over half a million individual knots. There is no shortcut.
Washed in cold mountain water. Dried flat under the Atlas sun. Pile trimmed to uniform height with hand shears. Fringes twisted. Then inspected, measured, photographed, and certified.

Questions
Turn it over. A handmade rug will show slight irregularities in the knot pattern on the reverse β this is the weaver's fingerprint. Machine-made rugs have perfectly uniform backs. Every ARINID rug ships with a Certificate of Origin documenting the weaver, village, materials, and knot density.
A handmade rug is a living object. The wool breathes, ages, and softens over decades. The natural lanolin repels stains. The irregularities in the weave create depth that no machine can replicate. These rugs are passed down through generations β they appreciate, not depreciate.
With basic care β vacuuming, rotation, prompt spill attention β a hand-knotted wool rug lasts 50 to 100 years. Many vintage Moroccan rugs in use today were woven in the 1940s and 1950s. The wool grows softer and the colours deepen with age.
