9x12 Rug: Hand-Knotted Moroccan Wool Around 9 Γ— 12 Feet

Last updated

A 9x12 rug is the size that takes a living room from furnished to finished. Where an 8 Γ— 10 holds the front legs of the furniture, a 9 Γ— 12 holds the furniture itself: sofa, chairs and tables all standing on the rug, with space left to walk. It is also the size where hand-knotted pieces are hardest to find at exactly the stated dimensions. Our rugs nearest to nine by twelve measure from about 8 ft 2 in to 10 ft wide and from 11 ft 6 in to 13 ft 1 in long. All are Beni Mrirt rugs, knotted by hand in wool in Morocco.

What fits on a 9x12

A three-seater sofa, two armchairs, a coffee table and a side table, all with every leg on the rug. Or a sectional with its chaise, plus one chair. That is the point of the size: nothing is half on and half off, so nothing rocks, and the group reads as a single piece of the room.

In a bedroom, a 9 Γ— 12 laid across a king bed leaves almost three feet of rug on either side and room at the foot for a bench. In a dining room it takes a table for eight, up to about 8 ft long, with the chairs staying on the rug when pulled back.

The room a 9x12 needs

Leave 12 to 18 inches of floor showing on every side. That makes the smallest comfortable room about 11 Γ— 14 ft, and the rug looks better still in 13 Γ— 16 ft or more. In rooms narrower than eleven feet, the border on the long sides gets too thin and the rug starts to look like fitted carpet.

Doors are the other limit. Check every door that opens into the room: a dense rug of this kind has a deep pile, and a door that clears the bare floor may not clear the wool. Floor vents, hearths and built-in cupboards are worth marking on a sketch before you order.

9x12 against 8x10 and 10x14

The step up from 8 Γ— 10 adds a foot on each side and two feet in length, which sounds modest and comes to 35 per cent more rug. Choose the 9 Γ— 12 when you want the back legs of the chairs on the rug, or when the sofa is longer than about eight feet.

Go beyond it, to roughly 10 Γ— 14, only in rooms of sixteen feet and more or in open-plan spaces, where a 9 Γ— 12 would leave the seating adrift in the middle. When you are caught between two sizes, tape both outlines on the floor and live with them for a day.

Why our pieces are near 9x12, not exactly on it

A weaver fixes the width when she sets up the loom and lets the length follow the design. Our large Beni Mrirt rugs cluster at two widths, about two and a half metres and about three metres, which is 8 ft 2 in and 9 ft 10 in. An exact nine-foot width is uncommon among them.

In practice you choose between two families. Pieces around 8 ft 2 in to 8 ft 6 in wide and close to 12 ft long suit rooms where width is tight. Pieces near 10 ft wide and 13 ft long suit rooms with space to spare. The measured dimensions of each rug are on its page; compare them with your taped outline.

The rugs in this selection

Every rug here is a Beni Mrirt: closely knotted and heavy, with a deep pile that stays flat without a pad. Colours are mostly quiet, in sand, taupe, ivory and camel, with a few darker and stronger pieces. Designs are restrained, as suits this scale: bands and lines, a wide lattice or grid, a border, and near-plain fields with a faint drawing.

A rug of this size arrives as a large, heavy parcel and takes two people to lay. Each is one of a kind and leaves the page once sold. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked

Questions

How big is a 9x12 rug in centimetres?
274 Γ— 366 cm. Hand-knotted rugs fall around that figure; the pieces shown here run from about 250 to 305 cm wide and 350 to 400 cm long.
What size room do I need for a 9x12 rug?
At least about 11 Γ— 14 ft, so that 12 to 18 inches of floor show on every side. The rug looks most at ease in rooms of 13 Γ— 16 ft and larger.
Should I choose 8x10 or 9x12?
Choose 9 Γ— 12 if you want all the furniture fully on the rug or have a sofa longer than about eight feet. Choose 8 Γ— 10 if the larger outline would come within a foot of the walls.
Will a 9x12 rug fit under a king bed with nightstands?
Yes. Laid across the bed and starting just in front of the nightstands, it leaves almost three feet on each side and a strip at the foot.

The person behind the piece

β€œBefore you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light β€” not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”

I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing β€” and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.

Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
