Beni Ourain vs Beni Mrirt: Two Middle Atlas Rugs Compared
Last updated
Beni Ourain vs Beni Mrirt is a comparison between close relatives. Both come from the Middle Atlas of Morocco, both are hand-knotted in wool, and at first glance both are pale rugs with simple geometric drawing. The differences are in the hand and in the range. A Beni Ourain is the classic: ivory, dark diamonds, soft and deep. A Beni Mrirt, named after the town of Mrirt near Khenifra, is denser and heavier, plainer in design, and made in many more colours and in larger sizes. This page compares the two and says when each is the better choice.

Density and weight
This is the main difference. A Beni Mrirt is generally knotted more closely than a Beni Ourain, so there is more wool in every square foot. The rug is heavier, lies flatter and feels firmer and more compact underfoot. People often describe the surface as velvety.
A Beni Ourain has a looser, shaggier character. It is softer to sink into and lighter to move. Under a dining table or a desk, where chairs move, the denser Beni Mrirt copes better. Beside a bed or in front of a fire, the Beni Ourain is the more inviting.
Design
The Beni Ourain design is the famous one: a lattice of dark diamonds on ivory, drawn freely, with lines that wander. It has more visible pattern and more of the hand in it, and it is the look that most people have in mind when they picture a Moroccan rug.
A Beni Mrirt is quieter. Many have only a few lines or bands, a faint grid or a border, and some are entirely plain, with the texture of the wool as the only design. This restraint is why the type suits contemporary and minimalist interiors so well.
Colour and size
Beni Ourain rugs are almost always ivory or cream. Beni Mrirt rugs are made in a wide range: ivory, sand, taupe, camel, charcoal, terracotta, green, gold. If you want the Middle Atlas look in a colour, you are looking for a Beni Mrirt.
Size is the other practical difference. In our collection the Beni Ourain rugs are mostly around 6 ft 7 in by 9 ft 10 in, with a few long ones. The Beni Mrirt rugs run much larger: fifty-four of them are over 86 square feet, and the largest is about 12 by 15 feet.
Beni Ourain vs Beni Mrirt: which to choose
Choose a Beni Ourain for the classic look, for softness, and for rooms where the rug should have some character of drawing: living rooms, bedrooms, anywhere you sit on the floor.
Choose a Beni Mrirt for a large room, for a dining room or a study, for a plain or nearly plain rug, or for colour. It is also the more forgiving of heavy furniture. Both are cared for in the same way: suction only, a pad underneath, and a half-turn twice a year.
What we hold
Twenty-two Beni Ourain rugs: seventeen on an ivory or cream ground, more than half with diamonds or a lattice, two with the pattern carved in relief and one plain. Sixteen measure around 6 ft 7 in by 9 ft 10 in.
One hundred and nineteen Beni Mrirt rugs: thirty-three in sand or taupe, thirty in ivory or cream, twelve in camel, and others in terracotta, charcoal, green, gold and teal. The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
