3x5 Rug: Small Hand-Knotted Wool Rugs with a Big Drawing
Last updated
A 3x5 rug is not a large rug made smaller. It has a different job. A big rug holds a room together; a small one makes a single place: beside the bed, in front of an armchair, inside the door, at the foot of a bookcase. One piece, and a patch of floor becomes somewhere to stand or sit. The rugs on this page are our smallest, all Azilal pieces knotted by hand in Morocco, between about 3 ft 1 in and 3 ft 8 in wide and 4 ft 6 in to 5 ft 1 in long. Nearly all are multicoloured, drawn freehand on a pale ground.

Where a 3x5 earns its place
Beside a bed is the classic spot: wide enough for both feet and a pair of slippers, short enough to leave the rest of the floor clear. In front of a reading chair it marks out a corner. In a hallway that is too short for a runner, it does the same work in less space. Under a console or a small desk it gives the furniture something to stand on.
What a 3 Γ 5 cannot do is carry a sitting area. Under a sofa it looks like a mat that has wandered in from the bathroom. If the rug is meant to sit beneath seating, begin at 5 Γ 8 ft. And although the size tempts people to use it by the kitchen sink, hand-knotted wool is better kept away from standing water and frying.
Small is where colour is allowed
With a large rug, a quiet tone is the prudent choice. With a small one the logic reverses. Fifteen square feet cannot overwhelm a room, so strong colour and bold drawing are exactly right. In a room of white walls and plain furniture, a bright little rug works like a painting laid on the floor.
The pieces here are Azilal rugs: an ivory ground crossed by lines, diamonds and signs in red, blue, yellow and pink. No two are alike, because the weaver draws from memory and changes her mind as she goes. Some are crowded and cheerful, others carry only a few marks. Choose the one you would be glad to see every morning.
Layering, and hanging on a wall
A small hand-knotted rug laid at a slight angle on a larger flat rug, jute or sisal for instance, lets you furnish a big room with a piece that would be too small alone. The plain rug gives the size, the Azilal gives the colour. Put a non-slip layer between the two, or the top rug will travel.
Rugs of this size also hang well. An Azilal has a light pile and weighs little, so it can go on a wall like a tapestry, hung from a rod through a sleeve stitched along the top edge so that the weight is spread. On a wall it is safe from feet and can be the brightest thing in the room.
Keeping a small rug still and clean
The smaller and lighter the rug, the sooner it slides. On timber, laminate, vinyl and tile, a non-slip pad underneath is not optional, least of all beside a bed, where you step onto it half awake. Cut the pad an inch or so smaller than the rug all round.
Otherwise a small wool rug is easy company. Vacuum it weekly without a beater bar, and take it outside for a shake now and then, which its weight allows. Blot spills with cold water and a white cloth. It does not belong in a washing machine: hand-knotted wool felts and shrinks there.
The rugs in this selection
All are Azilal rugs with a modest pile. Widths run from about 3 ft 1 in to 3 ft 8 in and lengths from 4 ft 6 in to 5 ft 1 in, so none is exactly three by five, and each listing gives the measured size. If you need something a little longer, the 4 Γ 6 selection follows on from this one.
Every rug is one of a kind and leaves the page when it is sold. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- How big is a 3x5 rug in centimetres?
- About 91 Γ 152 cm. The hand-knotted pieces shown here measure roughly 93 to 112 cm wide and 138 to 156 cm long.
- Is a 3x5 rug big enough for a living room?
- Not as the main rug. It works as an accent in front of a chair or layered on a larger rug. Under a sofa, start at 5 Γ 8 ft.
- Will a small wool rug slip?
- On smooth floors, yes, unless it has a non-slip pad. Use one slightly smaller than the rug. It keeps the rug flat and safe to step on.
- Can I put a 3x5 wool rug in the washing machine?
- No. Hand-knotted wool shrinks and felts in a machine. Vacuuming, shaking and blotting are enough, and a specialist can wash it properly when needed.

The person behind the piece
βBefore you buy, Iβll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light β not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.β
Iβm Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing β and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, Iβm on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
