The best bedroom rugs do something no other rug in the house is asked to do: they are the first thing you touch in the morning and the last at night, always with bare feet. That changes the priorities. Softness comes first, quiet second and looks third. Durability, which rules in a hallway, hardly matters, because nobody wears shoes here. What makes the best bedroom rugs different
A bedroom rug can be softer, paler and deeper in pile than a rug anywhere else. There is little dirt, there are no chairs to drag and there is no food. This is the room for the thick ivory rug that would not last a month in the hall, and for wool with a long, springy pile on a good felt pad.
Quiet matters as much. A bedroom with a hard floor and little furniture echoes, and footsteps travel to the room below. A dense wool rug absorbs both. Colour matters for rest: soft, low-contrast rugs calm a room, while a very bold pattern at the foot of the bed keeps it lively. Decide which you want to wake up to.
The main bedroom
Use one large rug under the lower two thirds of the bed, showing at least 18 to 24 inches on each side and at the foot. With a queen bed that is about 8x10, and with a king 9x12. One big rug makes the bed look anchored and the room finished.
Choose depth and quiet colour: ivory, cream, sand, soft grey or a muted earth tone. A faint lattice or a tone-on-tone pattern adds interest without noise. If the room has a seating corner, let the same rug run under it, or add a small second rug of a different pattern in the same palette.
The small bedroom and the guest room
Where the bed nearly fills the room, forget the big rug. A runner on the side you get out of, or one on each side, puts wool exactly where it is needed and leaves the floor visible, which makes the room look larger. A small rug at the foot does the same if the sides are tight.
A guest room is used rarely and should feel generous at once. A mid-sized rug of about 5x8 beside the bed or under its foot, in a warm colour or a cheerful pattern, does more for the welcome than any number of cushions. It is also a good home for a rug you love that fits nowhere else.
A child's room and a rented room
For children, choose a patterned rug in mid-tones, dense, with a non-slip pad, and expect it to be played on. Multicoloured rugs hide felt-tip and juice. The rug will outlast the cot and the bunk bed, so avoid themes and pick something that will still suit a fifteen-year-old.
In a rented bedroom with a floor you would rather not see, the rug is the one thing you can change. Go as large as the room allows, so that it covers the floor almost like a fitted carpet, with a narrow margin. A good rug also leaves with you, which the landlord's carpet does not.
