Rug Under a Dining Table: The Size the Chairs Decide

A rug under a dining table is sized by the chairs, not by the table. When someone pushes back to stand up, all four chair legs have to stay on the rug. If the back legs drop off the edge, the chair tips, the rug edge curls, and within a year the border is frayed along one line. The fix is arithmetic: the rug needs two feet of margin beyond the table on every side. This page works that out for the common table sizes, covers round tables, and explains which kind of rug survives under one.

The rule: table size plus four feet
A dining chair needs about two feet behind the table edge to be pulled out and sat on. So the rug should extend at least 24 inches past the table on every side, which means adding four feet to both the length and the width of the table. Thirty inches a side is more comfortable if the room allows it.
Measure the table at its largest. If it has leaves that you use at holidays, decide whether the rug should work for the extended table or for the everyday one. A rug that fits the long version will look generous the rest of the year. A rug sized for the short version will have chairs half off it at exactly the meals that matter most.
Rug sizes for 4, 6 and 8 seats
A table for four, around 36 by 48 inches, needs a rug of about 7 by 8 feet, so a 6x9 is slightly tight on the long sides and an 8x10 is comfortable. A table for six, around 36 to 40 inches by 60 to 72, needs an 8x10. That is the most common pairing.
A table for eight, 40 to 44 inches by 84 to 96, needs a 9x12. With an 8x10 the end chairs will sit half off the rug. For ten or more seats, look at a 10x14. In every case, check the room as well: leave at least eight inches of floor between the rug and the walls, and make sure a sideboard stands fully off the rug or fully on it.
Round and square tables
Under a round table the same margin applies in every direction: take the diameter and add four feet. A 48-inch round table needs a rug at least 8 feet across. A 60-inch table needs 9 feet. A round rug repeats the shape of the table and makes the dining area feel self-contained. A square one ties the round table to the lines of the room.
A rectangular rug under a round table also works when the room is clearly longer than it is wide, as long as the short side still clears the chairs. In hand-knotted wool, round and square rugs are rarely held as finished stock. Ours are made to order at the size you give, and the rugs on this page are rectangles.
Which rug survives under a table
Pile matters more here than anywhere else in the house. Chairs have to slide, and crumbs have to come out. A dense, lower pile lets a chair move without catching and gives up dirt to the vacuum. Deep, shaggy pile holds on to everything that falls and grabs at chair legs. Felt pads under the legs help on any rug.
Colour and pattern do the rest. A plain ivory rug under a dining table shows every spill by the end of the first week. A mid-tone, or a rug with a pattern, hides the small marks between cleanings. Wool is a good material for the job: it resists soaking for the first moments after a spill, so there is time to blot. Use cold water, and deal with spills on the day.
