Large Striped Rug: Bands and Lines in Hand-Knotted Wool
A large striped rug is the simplest way to give a big room direction. Lines running across the floor make the space feel wider; lines running along it draw the eye to the far wall. At 8 × 10 ft and above, that effect is strong enough to correct the proportions of a room. The rugs on this page are knotted by hand in Morocco in the Beni Mrirt style, and all of them are large. About half carry stripes, bands or lines in a second colour. In the other half the banding is tone on tone, a ribbing in the pile that appears as the light crosses it.

What stripes do at this size
On a small rug a stripe is decoration. On a hundred square feet it is architecture. Bands laid across a long, narrow living room slow the eye and make the side walls seem further apart. Laid lengthwise, the same bands stretch the room and lead towards a window or a fireplace.
Spacing matters more than colour. Wide bands far apart give calm and scale. Narrow lines close together give movement, and on a very large rug they can become restless. As a rule, the bigger the rug, the fewer and broader the stripes should be.
Knotted stripes are drawn, not ruled
In a flat-woven rug the stripe is made by the weft and runs dead straight from edge to edge. In a knotted rug every row is tied by hand, and the line is drawn as the rug grows. It thickens a little here, drifts a finger's width there, and sometimes stops short of the border.
That slight wander is what keeps a large striped rug from looking like a pedestrian crossing. In a deep Beni Mrirt pile the line also sinks into the surface and gathers shadow. Some bands are not a different colour at all. They are knotted a little lower than the field, so the stripe is made of relief and light.
Clear stripes or tone on tone
A stripe in a second colour, cream on charcoal, charcoal on cream, cream across caramel or forest green, makes the rug the graphic element of the room. It suits plain furniture and pale walls, and it reads from the doorway.
Tone-on-tone banding is for those who want a calm rug with a little order in it. From across the room it looks almost plain. Closer, or in low evening light, the ribs appear. It is the safer choice under a patterned sofa or in a room that already has strong lines in its architecture.
Which way to lay it
In a living room, run the stripes parallel to the sofa. They then pass under the coffee table as one continuous line and tie the seating together. Stripes running towards the sofa tend to look like arrows pointing at it.
Under a dining table, lay the bands along the length of the table so they follow the rows of chairs; crumbs disappear between them. In a room that is too long, turn the rug so the stripes cross the long dimension. Before deciding, lay a few strips of painter's tape on the floor in each direction and look from the door.
The rugs in this selection
Twenty-one rugs, all Beni Mrirt, dense and heavy. Ten carry stripes, bands or lines in a second colour: cream bands on charcoal and on caramel, charcoal lines and borders on cream and beige, paired cream stripes on sage, scattered cream lines on forest green, a cream grid on deep teal. Eleven are tone on tone, mostly in sand, taupe and cream, with a ribbed indigo, a charcoal and one in shades of green and teal among them.
Eight measure around 8 ft 2 in to 8 ft 10 in wide and 10 ft to 12 ft 4 in long. Twelve are around 10 × 13 ft, and the largest is 11 ft 11 in × 15 ft 4 in. The measured dimensions are given on every listing. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- Do stripes make a room look bigger?
- They change its proportions. Stripes laid across a room make it look wider; stripes laid along it make it look longer. On a large rug the effect is strong.
- Which way should the stripes run in a living room?
- Parallel to the sofa in most rooms, so that the lines pass under the coffee table and connect the seating. In a narrow room, lay them across the narrow dimension.
- Are all the rugs on this page clearly striped?
- No. About half have stripes or lines in a second colour. In the rest the bands are tone on tone and show as a ribbing in the pile, more visible in side light.
- Why are the lines not perfectly straight?
- The rugs are knotted by hand, row by row, with no template. The small variations are the mark of handwork and keep a large striped surface from looking mechanical.

The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is a one-off, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
