Black and White Striped Rug: Charcoal Lines on Cream Wool
A black and white striped rug can go two ways. Printed or woven by machine, it is an awning: hard black, optical white, bars of identical width, a pattern that shouts. Knotted by hand in wool, it is something else. The black is charcoal, the white is the cream of fleece, and each line is drawn by eye, so it thickens, thins and stops where the weaver decided it should. The rugs on this page are of the second kind. They are Beni Mrirt and Beni Ourain pieces from Morocco: lines and bands in charcoal on cream, the reverse in a few cases, and some stripes that exist only as relief.

Lines or bands: two different rugs
The spacing decides everything. A cream rug crossed by a few thin charcoal lines is mostly cream. From across the room it reads as a pale, calm surface with a faint rhythm, and it is as easy to place as a plain rug. This is the version for rooms that already have a lot in them.
Even bands of dark and light are a different proposition. Here the pattern is the point: graphic, strong, closer to a piece of furniture than to a background. It suits rooms with plain walls and few other patterns. Between the two lie rugs with lines grouped in pairs or set at irregular intervals, which have movement without the hard beat of regular bars.
Why hand-knotted stripes look calmer
Perfect stripes vibrate. When every bar is the same width and the contrast is absolute, the eye cannot settle, and a large area becomes tiring to look at. Hand-knotted stripes avoid this without trying. No two lines are the same width, the spacing drifts, and the edges are soft because wool pile blurs a boundary slightly.
The colours help. Charcoal against cream is a gentler contrast than black against bleached white, and both tones vary within themselves as hand-spun wool always does. The result has the clarity of black and white with none of the glare, which is why it works at living-room size.
Which way to run the stripes
Stripes lead the eye along their length. Laid across a narrow room, they push the walls apart and make it feel wider. Laid along it, they stretch it and draw you through. In a square room, set them parallel to the main sofa, where they underline the seating and settle the arrangement.
Consider the floor as well. Over boards, stripes at right angles to the planks look deliberate, while stripes running with them can seem like an echo that is slightly off. Because the lines on a hand-knotted rug are never ruler-straight, do not try to align them with a wall or a tile joint. Let the rug sit square to the furniture instead.
Colour, wood and other patterns
A black and white rug is the best possible ground for colour. A green velvet sofa, a rust armchair or a blue painting gains from a floor that takes no side. Wood, tan leather and linen take the edge off the contrast and stop the room feeling like a diagram.
With other patterns, change the scale. Fine lines on the rug sit well with a big floral or a bold abstract; broad bands want small, quiet prints around them. The one clash to avoid is a second black and white geometric of similar size, such as a checked throw on a banded rug. The two will flicker.
The rugs in this selection
About half the pieces are true charcoal-and-cream: horizontal lines floating on a cream field, bands outlined in charcoal, a labyrinth of right-angled stripes, and two dark rugs with cream bands. The rest are striped in relief only, cream on cream or charcoal on charcoal, where ribs and channels in the pile carry the design. We keep them together because they belong to the same family and suit the same rooms.
Sizes go from about 5 × 7 ft to roughly 10 × 13 ft 8 in. Each rug is one of a kind, with its measured size on its own page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- Is a black and white striped rug too bold for a living room?
- It depends on the spacing. Thin charcoal lines on a cream ground are quiet and easy. Wide, even bands are bold and need a calm setting. Hand-knotted stripes are softer than printed ones in either case.
- Are the stripes pure black and white?
- No. The dark is charcoal and the light is the natural cream or ivory of wool. The contrast is clear but gentler than black on bleached white, which makes the rug easier to live with.
- Which direction should the stripes go?
- Across the short dimension to widen a narrow room, along the length to stretch it. In a sitting area, stripes parallel to the sofa look settled; stripes running away from it add depth.
- Can I mix a striped rug with patterned cushions?
- Yes, if the scales differ. Pair fine lines with a large motif, or broad bands with small prints. Avoid another black and white geometric of the same size.

The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is a one-off, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
