6x12 Rug and 7x12 Rug: Long Hand-Knotted Wool for Long Rooms
A 6x12 rug is not a size most stores carry, and a 7x12 rug is rarer still. Yet a great many rooms need exactly that: a living room that is long and narrow, a wide hall, a galley dining space, the foot of a king bed. A standard 6x9 leaves a third of the floor bare, and an 8x10 will not fit between the walls. The long format is traditional in Morocco, where rugs were knotted for narrow rooms. The pieces on this page are knotted by hand in wool and measure 5 ft 5 in to 6 ft 7 in wide and 11 ft to 12 ft 8 in long.

The rooms that need a long rug
The first is the long living room, 11 or 12 ft wide and 18 ft or more deep, common in row houses and apartments. A sofa stands along one wall and the room runs past it. A 6x12 follows the room: the sofa's front legs sit on one long edge, a chair stands at the far end, and the wool reaches both.
The second is the long dining table. A table for eight is about 8 ft long, and with chairs pulled out it needs close to 12 ft of rug. Width is the limit here: at 6 ft, the chairs at the sides will not stay on the rug, so this works only with a narrow table or a bench. The third is the wide hall or landing, too broad for a runner and too long for anything else.
6x12 or 7x12, and what the foot changes
The extra foot of width decides whether furniture can stand on the rug or only beside it. At 7 ft, a sofa's front legs and a coffee table fit comfortably with space to walk. At 6 ft, the coffee table sits on the rug and the sofa touches its edge. Both arrangements are correct; they simply look different.
Our widest pieces in this length are 6 ft 7 in, a few inches short of 7 ft, and the narrowest are 5 ft 5 in. If your room needs a full 7 ft or more across, look at 8x10 and larger, or have the size made: the format can be knotted to order, to the centimetre. Mark the outline on the floor with painter's tape before deciding. In a narrow room, four inches matter.
Placing furniture on a long rug
Run the rug with the room, never across it. Leave 8 to 12 inches of floor along the side walls so the rug reads as a rug, and keep both ends clear of door swings. A thick pile can stop a low door, so check the clearance before the rug arrives.
In a living room, anchor one end with the sofa and the other with a chair, a bench or a console. A long rug with furniture at only one end looks like a runner that has grown. At the foot of a bed, lay it crosswise so that it shows on both sides. In a hall, centre it and let the floor frame it evenly.
Pattern over twelve feet
A long rug is seen along its length, from the door. A repeating diamond lattice carries the eye down the room and makes it feel ordered. Bands and lines laid across the width do the opposite: they slow the eye and make a narrow room seem wider.
A single deep colour, wine red or cobalt, turns the rug into a path of colour and suits a plain room with pale walls. An ivory ground with a loose drawing keeps a narrow room light. Avoid a very dark rug in a long room with a window at one end only; the far half will read as shadow.
The rugs in this selection
Ten rugs. Five are Beni Ourain with a long pile, mostly on a cream ground with an ornamental drawing; one of them has a faded palette. Three are Beni Mguild in full colour: a crimson with lines, a burgundy with a diamond lattice and a cobalt blue scattered with small signs in coral, yellow and cream. Two are Azilal on a cream ground: one crossed by diagonal bands in indigo and slate blue, one with scattered diamond medallions and angular forms in fuchsia, emerald, navy and coral.
The shortest are 11 ft to 11 ft 6 in long and the longest 12 ft 8 in. Widths run from 5 ft 5 in to 6 ft 7 in, with most between 5 ft 10 in and 6 ft 5 in. The measured dimensions are given on every listing. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- What rooms suit a 6x12 rug?
- Long, narrow living rooms, wide halls and landings, the foot of a king bed, and under a long, narrow dining table or bench.
- Do you have rugs that are a full 7 ft by 12 ft?
- Not at present. Our widest rugs in this length are 6 ft 7 in. A true 7x12 can be made to order, to the centimetre.
- Is a 6x12 rug wide enough for a dining table?
- Only for a narrow table or one with a bench. Chairs need about two feet of rug behind them on each side, and 6 ft leaves too little for a table of standard width.
- Why are so many Moroccan rugs long and narrow?
- They were knotted for the long, narrow rooms of mountain houses and used for sleeping as much as for the floor. The proportion has stayed part of the tradition.

The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is a one-off, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
