High Atlas Rugs: Azilal, Glaoua and the Rugs of the South

Last updated

High Atlas rugs come from the central and highest range of Morocco, the wall of mountains behind Marrakech that divides the Atlantic plains from the Sahara. Compared with the thick ivory rugs of the Middle Atlas, they are lighter in the hand and bolder in colour and drawing. Three traditions are worth knowing: Azilal in the central High Atlas, Glaoua around Telouet, and the fine weaving of the Taznakht area where the High Atlas meets the Anti-Atlas. This page describes each, explains what they have in common, and sets out what we hold.

The region

The High Atlas stretches for several hundred miles and includes the highest summits in North Africa. Its valleys are deep and separate, and villages on either side of a pass can differ in dialect and in weaving. The northern slopes are greener, and the southern slopes fall away to desert.

Weaving here was for the household: covers, cloaks and floor rugs, in wool from local flocks. That domestic origin shows in the modest sizes and the personal, unplanned designs of many High Atlas rugs.

Azilal

Azilal rugs take their name from the province of Azilal in the central High Atlas. They usually have a pale ground and a free scatter of coloured diamonds, zigzags, checkerboards and signs. Some are covered in colour from edge to edge.

They are the most playful Moroccan rugs, and each looks like the work of one imagination. Lighter than Middle Atlas rugs, they are easy to place, and their busy surfaces hide the marks of family life.

Glaoua and Taznakht

South-east of Marrakech, around Telouet, the Glaoua tradition produces rugs that combine three techniques: bands of knotted pile, bands of flat weave and bands of wrapped, embroidery-like pattern. The surface has a relief you can feel.

Further south, around the Siroua massif and the town of Taznakht, weaving is especially fine, in pile and in flat weave, with a liking for saffron yellow, black and red. The names Glaoua, Taznakht and Aït Ouaouzguite overlap in the trade.

High Atlas rugs in a room

These are rugs of character. An Azilal brings colour and movement to a white or neutral room and suits children's rooms, studies and family living rooms. Keep the furniture near it plain, and let the rug be the picture.

The lighter build of High Atlas rugs is practical: they move easily, lie well under furniture and can be hung. On a hard floor they need a non-slip pad. Like all wool rugs, they are vacuumed with suction only and turned twice a year.

What we hold

Of the High Atlas types, we hold Azilal rugs: 120 of them. Seventy-four are multicoloured and twenty-four have an ivory or cream ground. Fifty-six measure around 6 ft 7 in by 9 ft 10 in, twenty-two are mid-sized, twenty-two are small and twenty are runners. We do not stock Glaoua or Taznakht pieces.

The rugs shown on this page come from our whole collection of 275 hand-knotted wool rugs. Each rug is one of a kind, with its exact measurements on its own page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

The person behind the piece

“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”

I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.

Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
