How to Get Oil Out of a Rug: Powder First, Soap Second
The trick to how to get oil out of a rug is to resist washing it straight away. Oil and water do not mix, and water poured on a fresh oil spill only pushes the oil sideways. The first tool is a dry powder that soaks the oil up. The second is the one product in the kitchen made to dissolve grease, which is dish soap. Between them they deal with cooking oil, butter, salad dressing, body lotion and most makeup. This guide is written for wool rugs, including hand-knotted ones.

Blot, then cover with powder
Lift any solid grease, such as butter, with the edge of a spoon. Blot liquid oil with paper towel, pressing lightly and lifting, without rubbing it in. Then cover the whole stain with a thick layer of cornstarch, baking soda or talc, extending a little beyond its edge.
Leave the powder for at least an hour. Overnight is better. It draws oil up out of the fibres and clumps or darkens as it does. Vacuum it off slowly. If the powder came up discoloured, apply a fresh layer and wait again. On a new spill, two rounds of powder often remove most of the oil before any liquid has touched the rug.
Dish soap for what remains
Stir a few drops of clear dish soap into a cup of lukewarm water. For grease the water may be lukewarm, never hot. Dab the solution onto the stain with a white cloth, working from the outside in, and leave it for five minutes so the soap can break up the oil. Blot with a dry cloth.
Rinse by dabbing with clean cold water and blotting, two or three times, until the pile no longer feels slick or soapy. Soap left in wool attracts dirt and shows later as a grey patch. Press a dry towel into the spot and prop the rug up until it has dried through.
Lotion, makeup and other oily stains
Body lotion, sunscreen and hair oil behave like cooking oil and respond to the same two steps. Foundation and lipstick add pigment to the grease. Use the powder, then the soap, and if colour remains, dab it with rubbing alcohol on a white cloth after testing a hidden corner for colourfastness.
Essential oils from a diffuser are concentrated and can affect dyes, so treat them quickly and generously with powder. Dark oils from outside the house, such as bicycle chain oil or motor oil, carry fine soot that soap alone will not shift. Blot, powder, and then hand those to a specialist.
What to avoid
Do not pour hot water on a grease stain in wool. Heat thins the oil and carries it deeper, and it can felt the pile. Do not rub, which spreads oil outward into a larger ring. Solvents such as white spirit or petrol dissolve grease but can also strip colour, and they leave fumes in the rug.
Avoid undiluted dish soap squeezed straight onto the stain. It is nearly impossible to rinse out of deep pile and leaves a sticky residue. A few drops in water work better than a tablespoon neat.
Old oil stains
An oil stain that was never treated darkens over time as it collects dust, and old cooking oil can yellow. Start with powder all the same: even after months it will pull some oil out. Follow with the soap step, repeated two or three times, and judge the result once the wool is dry. Improvement is usual. Complete removal is not guaranteed.

The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is a one-off, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
