Large Cream Rug: Ivory Wool at Living-Room Scale
A large cream rug changes the light in a room. Ten or twelve square metres of ivory wool reflect daylight upwards, lift a dark floor and make the furniture above look lighter than it is. It is the closest thing to adding a window. People hesitate for one reason, which is dirt, and that hesitation deserves a straight answer rather than a sales line. This page gives one, along with advice on size and pattern. The rugs shown are hand-knotted in Morocco, all Beni Mrirt, in ivory and cream, from about 8 × 10 ft upwards.

What a big pale rug does that a small one cannot
A small cream rug is an accent. A large one is a surface, and it behaves like a second floor laid over the first. On dark boards or dark tile it reverses the room: the heaviest plane becomes the lightest, and the space reads as bigger and calmer.
It also unifies. Sofas, chairs and tables of different woods and fabrics look related once they share the same pale ground. This is why designers so often start a living room with a large ivory rug and add colour afterwards, in things that are easy to change.
Cream, ivory and white are not the same
Wool is never bright white unless it has been bleached. Left as it grows, it is a soft off-white with a hint of yellow or grey, and that is the tone of these rugs. Cream is the warmer end, ivory slightly cooler, and the exact shade differs from piece to piece.
Against brilliant white walls, a cream rug looks warm and gentle, where an optical white synthetic would look blue and hard. Against greige or sand walls, ivory shares the same warmth. If the room has several pale surfaces, compare them in daylight: two near-identical off-whites side by side tend to look like a mistake.
The honest answer about keeping it clean
A cream rug shows more than a dark one, and a large one has more area to show it. That said, wool is the fibre to choose if you want pale. Its surface resists liquid for a few minutes, so a spill sits in beads long enough to blot, and dry dirt stays loose in the pile until the vacuum takes it.
Habits matter more than products. Shoes off at the door makes the single biggest difference. So does placement: a large cream rug is ideal in a sitting room or bedroom and a commitment under a dining table. With young children or dogs, pick a piece with lines or a lattice, which draws the eye away from small marks.
Plain, ribbed or lined
At this size a pure, unbroken field is the most luxurious option and the most demanding. A ribbed or banded surface, where the design is carried by the height of the pile alone, gives the same calm with more forgiveness, because shadow breaks up the plane.
Rugs with charcoal lines, whether a few horizontal strokes or a wide diamond lattice, are the easiest to live with. They keep the brightness of the cream ground and add just enough drawing to hold the surface together. On a pale floor they also give the rug an edge it would otherwise lack.
The rugs in this selection
All are Beni Mrirt rugs with a dense, heavy pile. They start at about 8 ft 2 in × 10 ft 6 in and go up to roughly 10 × 13 ft 8 in, with a cluster around 10 × 13 ft. None is entirely plain: several are worked tone on tone, and a number carry charcoal lines, bands, a border or a lattice.
Strong, direct sun deepens pale wool slightly over the years, so turn the rug twice a year. Each piece is one of a kind, with its measured size on its own page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- Is a large cream rug practical for a family?
- It can be, with two conditions: shoes come off at the door, and the rug has some pattern. Wool resists spills for a few minutes and vacuums clean easily; lines or a lattice hide everyday marks.
- What is the difference between cream and ivory?
- Both are natural off-whites. Cream is a little warmer and yellower, ivory a little cooler. Neither is bright white, which in wool only comes from bleaching.
- Does a cream wool rug turn yellow?
- Over many years, strong sunlight can warm the tone of pale wool slightly. Rotating the rug keeps the change even. Bleach and alkaline cleaners speed up yellowing and should never be used.
- What size should a cream rug be under a sectional?
- At least 9 × 12 ft, so that the whole sectional or at least all its front legs sit on the rug. A rug that stops short of the chaise looks undersized.

The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is a one-off, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
