Antique vs Vintage Rug: What Each Word Should Mean
Last updated
Antique vs vintage rug is a distinction of age, and in principle a simple one. An antique rug is about a hundred years old or more. A vintage rug is younger, old enough to belong to an earlier generation, usually somewhere between thirty and a hundred years. In practice the two words are used loosely, alongside others that sound like age and are not: vintage-style, distressed, overdyed, semi-antique. This page defines each term as the trade properly uses it, explains what the difference means for how you use and care for a rug, and says what we do and do not have.

The two words, defined
Antique: roughly a century old or older. The convention comes from the art and customs worlds, where a hundred years is the usual threshold. Antique rugs were made before modern mass production reached most weaving regions, and the best are collected.
Vintage: old but not antique. Dealers generally mean a rug made between about thirty and a hundred years ago. Vintage rugs are more plentiful and more usable than antiques, and their softened colours are much of their appeal. Semi-antique is an older trade word for the upper part of that range, around fifty to a hundred years.
Words that sound like age
Vintage-style, vintage-inspired and antique-look describe new rugs designed to resemble old ones. Distressed means that the rug has been deliberately worn, sheared or faded in production, or printed to look so. Many such rugs are machine-made in polyester.
Overdyed means that an old rug, usually a vintage one, has been bleached and then dyed again in a single strong colour. Patchwork means that pieces of several old rugs have been sewn together. Both use genuinely old material, but the result is a new product and should be described as one.
What the difference means in use
Age changes how a rug should be treated. An antique may have a brittle foundation and thin pile, and belongs in a quiet room or on a wall, on a good pad, away from chair legs. Its repairs should be done by a restorer.
A sound vintage rug can usually be used normally, though it deserves a pad, gentle vacuuming and a specialist wash before it comes into the house. A new rug, whether or not it looks old, has its whole life ahead of it and is the right choice for the hardest-working rooms.
Antique vs vintage rug: how to check a claim of age
Ask for the estimated age as a range, and the grounds for it. Look for uneven wear: lower pile along walking routes, fuller pile at the edges. Look at the back, which on an old rug is smooth and a little polished. Colour that is stronger at the base of the pile than at the tips suggests fading over time.
Be wary of uniform fading front and back, of ragged fringes on an otherwise fresh rug, and of exact dates. With Moroccan rugs in particular, very old pieces are scarce, and most rugs honestly described as old are vintage and not antique.
What we hold
We do not sell rugs as antique. Our collection is 275 hand-knotted wool rugs from Morocco, almost all recently made in long-established designs. One piece is listed as vintage. Seven rugs are in a faded, vintage-looking palette, which describes their colour and not their age.
We do not put dates on rugs, because we cannot prove them. If softened colour is what you want, those seven are the place to look. Each rug is one of a kind, with its exact measurements on its own page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is one of a kind, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
