A contemporary rug is, strictly, a rug of its own time: designed for the way rooms look now. In practice the word describes a recognisable family. There is no border and no central medallion. The design is abstract or nearly absent, often asymmetrical, and texture does as much work as colour. Such a rug suits open-plan rooms, large windows and furniture with clean lines. Contemporary and modern are not the same
Modern, in design, refers to a period: the modernism of the twentieth century, with its geometry, its primary shapes and its rules. A modern rug is orderly: a grid, a stripe, a block of colour with clear edges. Contemporary simply means current, and current taste is looser.
A contemporary rug borrows the restraint of modernism and drops the rules. Lines are allowed to wander. A motif may sit off-centre and never repeat. Colours are muted and close to one another. Where a modern rug looks designed, a contemporary one often looks drawn by hand.
The marks of a contemporary rug
Abstraction first: brushstroke shapes, broken lines, fields that fade into one another. Then asymmetry. Then texture used as pattern: high and low pile, carved lines, areas that show only as shadow. And scale: a few large gestures across the whole rug in place of a small repeat.
The palette is usually quiet: ivory, sand, grey, charcoal and earth tones, sometimes with one accent. Tone-on-tone designs, in which the pattern is only slightly darker or lighter than the ground, are typical, because they give a floor interest without adding another colour to the room.
Why Moroccan rugs read as contemporary
A Berber weaver working without a drawn plan arrives at many of the same things by a different road. Lines that are not straight. Compositions that are not symmetrical. Empty fields with a single sign. Pattern made of nothing but relief in the pile.
This is why these rugs sit so comfortably beside contemporary furniture and art, and why their designs are imitated in machine-made abstract rugs. The difference is that in the hand-knotted piece the irregularity is real. It is the trace of decisions made at the loom, and it does not repeat every four feet.
Choosing a contemporary rug that lasts
Fashion in rugs moves fast: one year's distressed print, the next year's curved pastel shapes. A design is likely to last if it would still look right with the furniture changed. Texture, tone-on-tone and simple line pass that test. Anything that depends on this season's colour does not.
Size generously. Contemporary rooms tend to be open, and the job of the rug is to define the seating area within a larger space, so all the furniture of the group should stand on it. Keep to one statement: an abstract rug, a plain sofa. And prefer wool to viscose, however good the sheen looks in a showroom.
