How to Get a Smell Out of a Rug: New, Musty or Pet Odours
How to get a smell out of a rug depends entirely on what kind of smell it is. A new wool rug smells of wool, and that fades by itself. A musty rug is damp somewhere, and no powder will fix it until it is dry. A rug that smells of pets has something in it that has to be neutralised or washed out. Covering any of these with a scented spray only adds a second smell. This page takes the three cases in turn, using methods that are safe for wool.

The smell of a new wool rug
New wool has a scent of its own, faintly animal and a little like a wet jumper. It comes from the wool itself and from having been rolled up tight for a journey. It is strongest in the first days, when the rug is unwrapped in a closed room, and on humid days.
Air is the cure. Open the windows, leave the rug unrolled, and walk on it. If you can, give it a few hours outside on a dry day, out of strong midday sun. Most of the smell goes within one to two weeks. It may come back faintly in damp weather for a while longer, and then stops.
Baking soda, used the right way
Dry baking soda absorbs odour and is safe on wool as long as it stays dry. Sprinkle a thin, even layer over the rug, work it lightly into the pile with your hand, and leave it for several hours or overnight. Then vacuum slowly, with suction only, going over the rug more than once.
Use it sparingly on deep pile, where powder is hard to get back out, and never wet it into a paste on wool. Avoid heavily scented carpet powders and fabric sprays. They mask the smell for a day and leave a residue that holds dirt, so the rug ends up needing cleaning sooner.
A musty or damp smell
Mustiness means moisture. Find where it came from before you treat the smell: a spill that was never dried, a plant pot, a damp floor, condensation near a door, a basement room. Lift the rug and check the back and the pad. A pad that stays wet underneath will keep the rug smelling whatever you do on top.
Dry the rug completely, both sides, with air moving across it. A dry, breezy day outside is ideal, with an hour or two of sun on the back. Indoors, raise it off the floor and use fans or a dehumidifier. If you can see spots of mildew, or the smell returns once the rug is dry, it needs a full wash by a specialist.
Pet odours
A general doggy smell usually sits in hair and skin oils on the surface, and regular vacuuming plus an occasional airing and dry baking soda keep it down. A sharp smell in one place is urine. Dried urine leaves salts that give off odour whenever the air is humid, which is why it seems to come and go.
Treat the spot with one part white vinegar to two parts cold water, from the back of the rug as well as the front, then rinse lightly with cold water, blot and dry thoroughly. If the smell persists after two attempts, the salts are deep in the foundation and only an immersion wash will remove them.
Smoke, cooking, and what not to do
Wool takes up smells from the air, including smoke and frying, and gives them back slowly. Repeated airing outdoors on dry days, with baking soda in between, shifts most of it over a few weeks. Heavy smoke odour, from a fire or years of cigarettes, generally needs a professional wash.
Do not use a steam cleaner to freshen a wool rug: heat and moisture risk felting and colour run, and damp wool smells worse. Our rugs are hand-knotted wool from Morocco, and this page shows the whole collection. Each rug is one of a kind, with its exact measurements on its own page. Frequently Asked
Questions
- Why does my new wool rug smell?
- It is the natural scent of wool, stronger after being rolled up for transport. Airing the room and the rug clears it within one to two weeks.
- Does baking soda remove smell from a wool rug?
- Yes, when used dry: sprinkle, leave overnight and vacuum thoroughly. Do not wet it into a paste.
- How do I get a musty smell out of a rug?
- Find and stop the source of damp, then dry the rug completely on both sides with airflow and some sun. If mildew shows or the smell returns, have it washed.
- Can I spray fabric freshener on a wool rug?
- It only masks the smell and leaves residue that attracts dirt. Airing and dry baking soda work better.

The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is a one-off, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
