Rug Size for a Queen Bed: 6x9, 7x10 or 8x10
Choosing a rug size for a queen bed comes down to one measurement you already know. A queen is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. Lay a rug across it, and whatever is left over on each side is where your feet land in the morning. Too little and the rug looks like a bath mat that wandered in. Too much and it swallows a small bedroom. This page gives the numbers for a 5x8, a 6x9, the in-between size around 7x10 and an 8x10, and shows the hand-knotted wool rugs we have in that range.

The numbers for each size
With the long side of the rug running across the bed, a 5x8 is 96 inches wide and leaves 18 inches a side. That is the least that still works, and only when the room is small. A 6x9 is 108 inches across and leaves 24 inches a side: a full step, and the size most queen beds are happiest with in an ordinary bedroom.
An 8x10 is 120 inches across and leaves 30 inches a side, with enough depth to show well at the foot. Between the two sits a size that American charts rarely list but hand-knotted rugs often come in: about 6 ft 7 in by 9 ft 10 in, the metric 200 by 300 centimetres. Across a queen it leaves 29 inches a side, almost exactly what an 8x10 does, while taking up less floor in depth.
Why depth matters as much as width
The rug normally starts a few inches in front of the nightstands, so the top third of the bed stands on bare floor. From there, a 5-foot-deep rug ends almost level with the foot of the bed and shows nothing. That is the real weakness of a 5x8: you see two narrow strips at the sides and no rug at the end.
A 6-foot depth leaves about a foot and a half beyond the bed, and 6 ft 7 in leaves about two feet. An 8-foot depth leaves three and a half feet, enough for a bench to stand entirely on the rug. If you want a bench or a pair of stools at the foot, that is the argument for the 8x10.
Fit the rug to the room
Leave a border of bare floor around the room, ideally a foot or more and never less than about eight inches. In a bedroom 11 feet wide, a 6x9 turned across the bed is the largest rug that still leaves that border. An 8x10 wants a room at least 12 feet wide, otherwise it runs under the wardrobe or up against the skirting board.
Then open the doors. Closet doors, the door to the hall and any door to a bathroom all need to swing over the rug or stop short of it. Thick wool pile can catch a door that clears a hard floor easily. Tape the outline on the floor and test each door before you order.
Bed against a wall, or a very small room
When the bed is pushed into a corner, a rug laid across it is half wasted. Turn the logic around and put the rug on the open side only: a 4x6 or 5x8 lying alongside the bed, or a runner about 2 ft 6 in wide and as long as the bed.
Two runners, one each side, are also the tidy answer in a narrow room where a 6x9 would leave no floor showing. They cost less wool than a large rug, they are easy to lift and shake out, and they put the softness precisely where it is used.
The rugs on this page
One hundred and thirty-two rugs between 6 ft 3 in and 8 ft 10 in wide and 9 ft 2 in to 11 ft 6 in long. Eighty-eight are in the 7x10 group, about 6 ft 7 in by 9 ft 10 in. Forty-four are 8x10 or close to it. Fifty-nine are dense, heavy Beni Mrirt, fifty-four are lighter and more colourful Azilal, sixteen are Beni Ourain, and there are two Beni Mguild and one vintage piece.
Thirty-seven have an ivory or cream ground, thirty-three are multicoloured, and twenty-one are sand or taupe; terracotta, greens, blues and caramel make up most of the rest. Each rug is one of a kind, with its exact measurements on its own page. Delivery is free worldwide, duties and taxes included.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- What size rug is best for a queen bed?
- A 6x9 in an average bedroom, and an 8x10 if the room is at least 12 feet wide or you want a bench at the foot. A rug around 6 ft 7 in by 9 ft 10 in sits neatly between the two.
- Is a 5x8 rug too small for a queen bed?
- Usually. It leaves 18 inches at each side and almost nothing at the foot. It works in a small room, or laid beside a bed that stands against a wall.
- How much rug should show on each side of a queen bed?
- Between 18 and 30 inches. Around 24 inches gives a full step out of bed without taking over the room.
- Can I put an 8x10 rug under a queen bed?
- Yes. It leaves 30 inches a side and about three and a half feet at the foot. Check that the room still shows a border of floor around it.

The person behind the piece
“Before you buy, I’ll send you a video of the actual rug in natural light — not a stock photo. I answer the messages myself.”
I’m Youssef. I started ARINID because this market is full of middlemen and machine-made imitations sold as the real thing — and I grew up close enough to the looms to know the difference.
Every piece we list is a one-off, hand-knotted in Morocco. If you want to talk through sizing for your room, I’m on the other end of the message. A rug at this level is a thirty-year decision. You should be able to look the person selling it to you in the eye.
