Atlas Mountains · Middle Atlas · Beni Ourain Tribe
Collected by Le Corbusier. Specified by the Eames. Unchanged for centuries. The Beni Ourain is the rug that defined modern interiors — hand-knotted in undyed virgin wool by the women of the Middle Atlas.
Heritage
In the 1920s, European architects discovered the Beni Ourain. Its abstract geometry and monochrome palette spoke a language that transcended borders — at once ancient and unmistakably modern.
Le Corbusier placed them in his villas. Frank Lloyd Wright laid them across Fallingwater. The Eames paired them with moulded plywood. Alvar Aalto, with birch. The rug endured because it required nothing around it. It was already complete.
Today, each Beni Ourain is still woven by hand in the same mountain villages, using the same undyed wool, the same diamond geometry passed from mother to daughter. What arrives at your door is not a reproduction. It is a continuation.

The Pieces
Every rug in this collection is one of one. The weaver's hand, the wool's character, the mountain light under which it was made — no two converge the same way twice.

Common Questions
The Beni Ourain is defined by its cream or ivory virgin wool background and bold geometric diamond or lattice motifs in undyed brown-black wool. Unlike the thick pile of Beni Mrirt, the Ourain has a medium pile that reveals the precision of each hand-tied knot. It is the rug that architects and designers have specified for over a century.
Between three and six months of continuous work. Each rug contains approximately 40,000 to 80,000 knots per square metre, depending on the density of the pattern. The wool is hand-carded, hand-spun, and often undyed — the natural contrast between cream and dark wool creates the signature palette.
New wool rugs shed lightly for the first two to four weeks. This is natural fibre releasing short ends left from the weaving process. It diminishes entirely with regular vacuuming. The rug grows softer and more lustrous with age.
