Hand-knotted runners show the same back-of-rug signatures as their rectangular counterparts: individual visible knots, weft lines, fringe continuous with the warp. Machine-made runners in 'Moroccan style' are particularly common at this shape because the runner format reduces the amortised cost of low-quality production.
