Moroccan Rug Pads — Why You Need One, Which to Buy
A rug pad is the most overlooked component of buying a hand-knotted Moroccan rug — and arguably the most important after the rug itself. Without a pad, the rug slides on hard floors (a tripping hazard), wears unevenly from foot traffic compressing the wool against the floor, and transfers grit and friction directly to the warp threads underneath. With the right pad, you can double the rug's effective lifespan and significantly improve comfort underfoot. The wrong pad — synthetic rubber backings, PVC mesh — actively damages the wool over time. The difference between right and wrong is worth understanding.
What a Rug Pad Actually Does
Three functions: it prevents sliding (the obvious one), it cushions footsteps to reduce wear on the wool pile, and it creates an air gap between rug and floor that prevents moisture trapping. The third function matters most for longevity — wool rugs placed directly on hardwood can trap humidity, leading to mildew on the underside and dye transfer to the floor. A felt-or-natural-fibre pad allows air to circulate.
On hard floors (wood, stone, tile, polished concrete) the pad's slip-resistance is the primary safety function. On carpet (where a rug-over-carpet placement is sometimes desired), a different pad type is needed — one that grips both sides without sliding.
Pad Types: What to Buy and What to Avoid
Recommended: felt-and-natural-rubber pads. These have a wool or polyester felt top (against your rug) and a natural-latex-rubber bottom (against the floor). They allow air circulation, grip both surfaces firmly, and contain no plasticisers or chemicals that off-gas or transfer to floor finishes. Brands like Mohawk, Rug Pad USA, and Eco-Sense produce these in various thicknesses. Expect $40–$120 for a 9×12.
Also acceptable: pure natural latex pads. These are pure rubber, no felt — slightly less cushioned but fully breathable. Good for rugs on radiant-heated floors where breathability matters most.
Avoid: pure PVC mesh pads (the cheap orange or white plastic mesh sold for $15–$25). PVC off-gasses, breaks down within 2 years, and leaves permanent residue on hardwood floor finishes. Also avoid: foam-rubber pads (compress permanently and lose function), memory-foam pads (too thick, rug walks on it), and any pad labelled 'self-stick adhesive' (adhesive transfers to floor finish and damages it).
Thickness: How Much Matters
Standard residential thickness: 1/4 inch (6 mm). This is the most common option and works for most situations — adequate cushioning without lifting the rug awkwardly above the surrounding floor. Thicker pads (3/8 inch or 1/2 inch) add noticeable foot-feel comfort and are worth the upgrade in bedrooms or living rooms where you are barefoot frequently. Thinner pads (1/8 inch) make sense only under doors that swing inward and would otherwise drag.
A common mistake: thicker is not always better. Above 1/2 inch, the rug starts to 'walk' across the pad with foot traffic — it shifts position and bunches at edges. The pad needs to be firm enough to keep the rug stationary; foam pads above 1/2 inch lose this firmness.
Sizing: How to Cut a Pad to Fit
The pad should be roughly 1 inch (2.5 cm) shorter than the rug on each side — so a 9×12 rug uses an 8'10" × 11'10" pad. This setback means the pad is invisible under the rug edge from any normal viewing angle, while still extending under most of the rug area. Most felt-and-rubber pads can be cut to size with sharp scissors or a utility knife; the cut edge does not unravel.
Mark the cut line on the felt side with a fabric pencil, lay the pad flat, and cut in straight lines. For round rugs, mark the circle with a string and pencil, then trim. Re-vacuum the rug and floor after installation — the cutting process releases felt dust.
